Book Club: September

Happy pre-Fall y'all! We can't wrap our minds around the fact that it's already September! We still have a few Summer-like months ahead of us, but we feel like September is one of those months where we get the best of both worlds.

You still get to enjoy your favorite pair of flip flops and temps hot enough to chill poolside, but at night you get hints of crisp fall air and the constant scent of pumpkin begins to fill the air. (Thanks Starbucks!). We have baseball and football overlapping. And because we start back-to-school mode at the end of July, our school district plops a nice week off right in the middle of the month.

So bring on September and all it's pre-Fall glory!

And to kick off one of our favorite months out of the year, we celebrate with one of our favorite blog posts out of the month - BOOK CLUB

WHAT WE READ...

CARRIE BETH
I finally finished the second in the Peachtree Bluff series, The Secret To Southern Charm by Kristy Woodson Harvey.

I really loved Slightly South of Simple and this was good, but not as great in my opinion. It follows the same three sisters and their time spent in the Georgia coastal town of Peachtree Bluff.  This story focuses on Sloan, the middle sister who's husband is deployed.  It deals with some pretty heavy family issues, while still being lighthearted and fun.  I enjoyed it, but just not quite as much as the first one.

In between the back to school year chaos I managed to sneak in a good book or two. First I'm going to kick off my reviews with one I actually read last month. Somehow I managed to miss sharing Evvie Drake Starts Over...and I can't believe it! It was SO GOOD!

I blame lack of sleep, the fact my alarm went off at 5:30a.m. for the first time in months, and that it was the first day back to school when I wrote last month's review. Because this one was too good to leave out!

I chose this one from our Summer Reading List, and the fact that I heard so many great things about it. It definitely lived up to the hype and I would put it as one of my top picks for 2019 so far!

Evvie Drake Starts Over follows Evvie after she becomes a widow. Things in a marriage aren't always what they seem sometimes and Evvie's relationship behind closed doors was completely different than the one all her friends and family knew. As any small town beloved doctor's widow would, Evvie does what she can to maintain any public perceptions, but that leaves her floating untethered and confused. In walks a new roommate, and fellow floater, Dean Tenney. Dean is a former major league star pitcher gone cold. The novel is a great mix of humor and romance with a little more depth into it. I couldn't put it down, and even though some parts were a little predictable, I loved the story line and the characters so much. Definitely one that I recommend, especially if you have a last minute summer beach vacay planned!

I loved reading Class Mom a few years ago, and when I saw there was a sequel I couldn't wait to read it. Back-to-school month seemed like the perfect time to dig into Laurie Gelman's latest novel, You've Been Volunteered. First, Gelman is hilarious! You know that game where you play who you would have at your dream dinner table? I think Laurie would definitely make my dinner table list. Second, I actually like You've Been Volunteered even more than I like Class Mom. I think the story line was a little more believable, and if you've ever had a child in school, totally relatable. But in a poking fun sort of way.

Order it. Read it. Die from uncontrollable laughter.

You're welcome.

Last year I read Next Year in Havana, and remembered loving it. So, when I saw there was a sequel I couldn't wait to give it a read. I just squeaked this one in for last month, and I have mixed feelings. When We Left Cuba follows Beatriz, the oldest sister from the Perez family, in the years following the time her family lived in Palm Beach following their evacuation from Cuba. It skips back and forth from present day to events that occurred in the past. Beatriz finds herself in the mix of American and Cuban politics as she becomes a spy for the CIA. There's romance, adventure, drama, and A LOT of politics. I enjoyed the story, and loved learning more about the mysterious beauty Beatriz, but sometimes I felt the story dragged in some spots. My mind is also in a million places lately and I feel like this genre sometimes needs the right mindset. If you enjoy a historical romance novels this might be a good one to put in your reading pile.

WHAT'S UP NEXT...

CARRIE BETH
I'm a sucker for a series and I am dying to know how the story ends for the Peachtree Bluff series. Because of that, I'm about to dive into The Southern Side of Paradise by Kristy Woodson Harvey. I've heard that this is the best of the three books and I can't wait to hear how everything gets wrapped up in the story...especially some of the family things that were left unanswered in the last book!

I few a few books in pile for next month and am going to try to change things up a bit, but kicking off the month with The Last Time I Saw You. I loved reading The Last Mrs. Parrish, and can't wait to see if this one by the same author is just as good!

Anything else we should add to our reading list for this month? We both are traveling this month and need some good plane/car riding material!
