Tie-Dye with your kids!

Happy Friday!!! I hope everyone has had a great week. It was Spring Break for my kids this week and since we were going to be stuck at home I was a little worried about how the week would go. At least during our school weeks half of the day is taken up with school work, but this week actually went by really fast. We kept ourselves entertained around here and managed to squeeze in some fun activities, too!

One thing that we all loved doing was tie-dye!!!! Now, it is a MESS, but totally worth it and we all had a lot of fun. I did a tie-dye birthday party for my daughter a few years ago and learned a lot during that process. If you are looking for a fun activity I would totally recommend doing some tie-dye at home with your kids.

I bought this tie-dye kit on Amazon for under $15. It comes in a bunch of different colors and some are available right away, but others are not going to be available until a few weeks. I also found kits by the same brand HERE and HERE. These kits come with all of the dye, plastic gloves, and rubber bands needed to make the different designs.

I ordered a few packs of white t-shirts (these do shrink!) and also some plain white sweatshirts (only $8) for us to dye. The directions say to wash all of the items you are going to tie-dye so I did that the day before. Then it was time to prep our shirts. I set up a table outside and the girls and I cut some of our shirts to make tank tops, crop tops (them, not me!), and I distressed my sweatshirt.

Then we looked up ideas online for how to fold, twist, swirl, and tie up the shirts. After we got all the shirts done we were ready to dye. I used plastic bins and would 100% recommend finding something around the house you could put the shirts in before putting the dye on. Plastic tubs, a bowl or something like that. After each shirt was done I put it in a plastic bag with their name on it and we would rinse the containers out so the color didn't absorb into their next shirt.

This is definitely an outdoor activity. It made a huge mess inside and I can't imagine doing this indoors. My kids were pretty good about keeping the color on the shirts, but we had a few mishaps here and there and my hands ended up looking tie-dyed in the end!

The directions say to let the shirts sit for 6-8 hours, but we left ours in the bags for 24 hours. The next step is to rinse out all of the excess color. This takes WAY longer than you would imagine. My kids like doing a lot of the dye! The last time we did this I rinsed the shirts in my laundry room sink, but this time I decided to let the kids help do it outside with a hose. It took a lot of spraying/rinsing/squeezing. We all got totally soaked and at one point my son went to put on a bathing suit. They had a blast!

Once the water is mostly clean it is finally it was time to take the rubber bands off and see how our designs turned out! This is the MOST fun part because I feel like you never know what it will look like!

The last step is to wash each of the items in hot water. I washed in groups of like colors because there is still some bleeding of the colors that happen. We couldn't be happier with how all of ours turned out. I was most surprised about my sweatshirt because I was expecting it to just be green and white. However, it turned out to be this really pretty green and teal color. Never could have planned that if I tried!

Friday Favorites: Tie-Dye Trends at Target

Happy Friday, friends! Our kids have been off school this week for Winter Break so it's been a semi-relaxing week here for us. The end of our winter break means March is just over a week away. In our minds March means spring and spring means new trends. One trend we are LOVING for this spring is tie-dye. Everywhere you look you'll see tie-dye pieces and one of our favorite stores has a ton of tie-dye trends. Target never lets us down!

3. Hooded sweatshirt - $24.99 - We love the way this one laces up in the front. Super cute with leggings or jeans now and will be great transitional piece for spring!

4. Hooded sweatshirt - $24.99 - This one is pretty with the pastel colors and the shorter length makes it a great one to wear with shorts down the road.

5. Short sleeve blouse - $19.99 - This blouse is really light weight and the dye effect is very subtle.

6. Sports bra - $19.99 - Comes in a couple colors and are very bright and fun!

7. Long sleeved blouse - $29.99 - This bright yellow is certain to brighten up any gloomy day as you look forward to spring!

8. Leggings - $34.99 - These come in a few colors and coordinate with the tie-dye sports bras.

9. Lounge sweatshirt - $19.99 - We love this super soft sweatshirt and the color is just beautiful!

10. Sleep dress - $19.99 - The same super soft material as the pajamas and something you will want to sleep in every night!

12. V-neck tee - $8.00 - Want a super affordable piece? This is it! This tee is really soft, we love the bright color dye design and would look great with leggings, jeans or denim shorts as it starts to warm up! It also comes in yellow.

Tie-Dye Birthday Party

A few weeks ago my oldest turned 11 and we celebrated last week with a tie-dye birthday party! We had done tie-dying kit I picked up a few weeks ago and the kids had so much fun that I suggested doing it as a party theme. She loved the idea and so did all the other kids who attended the party.

I bought this tie-dye kit for the party and it was perfect because it comes with everything needed…the dye, rubber bands and plastic gloves.

I did end up buying extra rubber bands and rubber gloves to just be sure we would have enough and I’m glad I did.

I bought packs of white t-shirts (they shrink, so size up!) and also white pillowcases so that each girl could dye two items. The kit came with instructions on how to do different designs and after doing a test run previously I could help the girls with a few different methods.

I set up a table outside with a plastic table cloth to try to protect the best I could and had all of the colors of dye available for the girls to use.

We used clear plastic bins to do the dying in so that it wouldn’t go everywhere and every time I went to grab my phone and take a picture, I had to rush and avoid a tie-dye emergency. I told Jen that next time I want to tie-dye with 12 girls she needs to remind me to think again. In all seriousness though, the kids had a blast and it was such a fun party.

Because the tie-dye needs to set for 6-8 hour we weren’t able to actually finish them off before the party was over so I had the kids put each of their projects into a gallon zip-top bag and then I sent them home with an extra set of rubber gloves and this free printable directions of how to wash out and finish the tie-dye at home.

The party was in the afternoon so I just did a nugget tray, fruit and a few other snacks for the girls along with some pink lemonade and waters. I found these tie-dye bandanas at my local craft store that we cut to use for a garland.

The birthday girl wanted cookies instead of cakes so I had a local mom that I knew make these decorated sugar cookies.

We had so much fun untying the shirts my kids did and seeing how they turned out! Everyone was pretty impressed and have been wearing their shirts a bunch.
