Football Burlap Door Hanger {Tutorial + Giveaway}

***Be sure to read all the way to the bottom of this post for info about a GIVEAWAY!!!***

Last week I shared some of my football themed decor with y'all and today I will be sharing a tutorial on how to make these adorable burlap football door hangers!

 I had seen similar door hangers for just about every holiday or occasion in gift shops and I just knew I could do something very similar myself.  Plus, considering that I now have two front doors to decorate, instead of just one) I need two of everything so I knew making it was my better option.  The good news is, they weren't that hard to make so I know you can do it, too!

First, I used a large piece of paper from my kids drawing notebook and folded it in half two times to draw the shape I wanted to use for the footballs, and cut that out.

Next, I used that template as a pattern to trace onto the burlap.  My football is approximately 21 inches by 14 inches.

I cut through two layers of burlap so I could have a front piece (that would be painted) and a plain piece for the back.

Now time for painting!  I happened to have some brown paint left over from an old project, so I used that for the football, but I normally would have just used all acrylic paints.  I used a large sponge brush to paint it on and it takes a good amount of paint to get a good covering.

***Important to remember - The burlap is tightly woven, but there are still tiny little holes in the fabric that the paint WILL soak through.  I used an old plastic table cloth under my painting area to protect my granite top.  You have to do this or you will end up with paint all over your surface!

Once the brown paint was dried I used white acrylic paint and white paint pen to add the details of the football.

After that was completely dry I added my team color with red acrylic paint and then outlined everything with a black paint pen to make it really look clean and to make the red pop.

I added the wording with a paint pen and then it was ready to assemble.

Use a hot glue gun to glue the edges of the painted front and the plain back together leaving an area at the bottom big enough to fit your hand in.

Stuff the football with plastic bags (a great way to recycle them) and fill it to your liking.  I used about 14 bags for one football.

After gluing the hold closed you are ready to add the wire hanger.  Now, for this step you could also glue on ribbon or a burlap wired ribbon to hang it with, but I like the look of the wire.  This was some I got from my local craft store in the jewelry section.  From the back of the hanger, stick one end through just below where you have glued and then on the front twist the excess around your finger or a pen to spiral it.  I then added a dab of hot glue where it goes through the football on both sides so it wouldn't slip or pull out.

The last step is to add some fun coordinating ribbons and you are all set to hang your masterpiece and show your team spirit!

The possibilities are really endless for this type of project. I'm already planning for fall, Christmas, birthdays, and just about every other occasion I can think of to make these festive and fun door hangers!
