Join the Fur-Ever Bad Kitty Read-A-Long {Giveaway!}

I am lucky that my kids love reading as much as I do. I remember the days that it was a struggle to get my oldest to read. It was a process and part of the switch was due to finding books that he really enjoyed. Now having several readers in the mix, it's always fun to find books - or series - that the whole group enjoys.

Topping the list lately is the Bad Kitty series by Nick Bruel.

L.C. is cat obsessed (that might be the understatement of the year), and was instantly drawn to the idea of reading a series about a silly kitty who wrecks havoc on her owners home. Over the summer she read Bad Kitty Joins the Team, and since it has a soccer ball on it (and soccer is his favorite sport), Cute picked up the book and read it too.

The stories are laugh out loud funny, and have the best illustrations to accompany the hilarious antics of Bad Kitty.

The kids love them so much that when I saw there was a fun activity they could participate in leading up to the latest release in the series, I instantly reached out to the Bad Kitty team to ask if we could have a little fun of our own.

FUR-EVER BAD KITTY READ-A-LONG

In anticipation of Bad Kitty's newest release, Bad Kitty Goes on Vacation (out December 29, 2020), Macmillian Children's Publishing Group is hosting a fun read-a-long. It started a few weeks ago, but there is plenty of time for kids to pop-in when ever they want and join in on the fun.

Here are some fun check lists they created to follow what they will be chatting about each week.

BAD KITTY BOOK GIVEAWAY

When I reached out to the Bad Kitty team I also asked for a little something for you guys. I know lots of parents are always trying to find ways to encourage their kids to read, and seeing how much my two (very different) children enjoy this series, I know yours will too!

One lucky reader will win a set of Bad Kitty books from the series!

Leave a comment letting us know who you are excited to give the books to and you are all entered!
Winner will be announced on November 2, 2020.

Our Elementary & Middle Grades Students Favorite Books

Reading is always important to us, and an activity we try to encourage our kids to do. We have all different levels of readers, and all different types of readers. Some prefer a quick and easy book, some prefer a more in depth chapter book, and some want to skip the reading and go straight to the Audible version. Either way we feel reading - no matter how you are doing it - is super important.

Now that we all find ourselves home a little more than normal (Okay, a lot more than normal. Thanks pandemic of 2020.), we've had way more downtime as a family to read. We know a lot of friends struggling to find things for their kids to read right now, so we asked our kids what their favorite books are.

Some of their choices we weren't shocked by, and some we were surprised about. Here are their current book recommendations.

ELEMENTARY GRADE READERS

  • Graphic Novels - Several of our kids went on a graphic novel kick for a while. Topping the list are the Dogman Series, Captain Underpants Series, and Babysitter's Club Series
  • Dragon Book Series - Written by the infamous author of the Captain Underpants Series, these Acorn books are excellent for early elementary school readers. They have short, quick chapters, colorful pictures, and that silly humor Pilkey is known for.
  • Unicorn & Yeti Series -  Another Acorn chapter book series. Super fun, with short chapters designed for early elementary school readers.
  • Princess in Black Series - Cross a princess with a super hero and you get Princess in Black. This is a new favorite we received at Christmas, but perfect for those who are just getting into chapter books.

  • Notebook of Doom Series - A cute, fun not-so-horror story series for kids. Lots of pictures and easy chapters that make it fun for kids. Our kids have loved these. (Bonus: It has no potty talk!)
  • Ball Park Mysteries Series - If you have a sports loving little one these Ball Park Mysteries are perfect. Both our boys love these. Each story takes place in a famous ball park in the United States.

Upper Elementary School Reading
  • Harry Potter Series - This is a no brainer classic that almost every child loves. We've been reading them and then watching the movie after. We also love this illustrated version that has pictures that kids can use to enjoy and aid their imagination.
  • Wonder - A story of a special child and kindness! It was made into a movie, but read the book first. Definitely a story everyone should put on their list.
  • Because of Mr. Terupt - This follows a group of students thrown together in a fifth grade class with a new teacher who teaches lessons just beyond the typical classroom subjects. The sequels  (Mr. Terupt Falls Again and Saving Mr. Terupt) are also great too!
  • The One and Only Ivan - Told from the point of view of Ivan, a gorilla living in captivity in a mall for 27 years. Such a heart warming story and it was made into a movie! The sequel, The One and Only Bob, comes out in May!

MIDDLE GRADE READERS

  • When - This story tops our Middle Schooler's list. It follows a young girl who has the unique ability to see people's death date on their forehead. The talent throws her into a police investigation in this fast paced read.
  • 5 Feet Apart - For fans of The Fault in Our Stars. This heartwarming story follows two terminally ill teens who become friends, and have one wish - to be together.
  • The Sun is Also a Star - Two teens on very different paths run into each other in NYC. Scientifically it makes no sense why they would fall in love - but some would say it was written in the stars. Such a beautiful book and it has a movie follow up for more entertainment.
  • A Dog's Purpose - A heartwarming story about a dog's perspective on his humans. Another great one where a movie is available after the read.
  • Percy Jackson Series - We read/listened to this series over the course of last Summer. It mixes humor, Greek Mythology, and action. Our kids loved it! (see review link below)
  • Artemis Fowl Series - Another great series to read now before the movie comes out in a few months. This one is action packed from start to finish.  A 12 year old millionaire super genius that just happens to be a criminal mastermind - what's not to love when you're in middle school?

OTHER GREAT SUGGESTIONS

Here are a few posts from the past where we chatted about kids' book suggestions. We thought these might be helpful, or give you fun activities to help extend the reading.

OTHER RESOURCES TO HELP

Here are a few other fun kid's reading sources that we have found that are a huge help in encouraging reading lately or are great places to get free or online books that your little ones can enjoy.
  • Audible Kids- Amazon announced that Audible is doing a selection of free online audio books for the duration of everyone's quarantine. They work on a desktop, laptop, tablet or phone.
  • Open Library - A free online library of digital and audio books. You check out books and return them just like you do at your local library.
  • Over Drive - Another free online library.
  • Storyline - Books read to kids online by celebrities (our kids love this!).

What are some of your kids favorite books? We would love to add some to our list!

Also, if you know of any other great resources we should add to our list let us know.

A Review of Amazon's Kindle Kids Edition

My son went from not ever wanting to read (on his own) to being obsessed with books. He now reads non-stop. This Summer was the turning point. All it took was finding was a book series for him to really get sucked into to. For him it was the Dog Man series by Dav Pilkey and the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan (read his review here).

He's also really gotten into listening to books, and downloads Audibles at a faster rate than I do. I love that he has a new found love for all things reading.

In January he turned nine. He had mentioned some new books he wanted, but I decided to do some research about getting him his own e-reader. Besides, it seemed like a much better alternative to adding more toys to my house. I had the thought that everyone could get him gift cards for books for his birthday or any holiday and it could be the gift that would keep on giving.

After a few weeks of research, I decided on the Amazon Kindle for Kids. It came out in October, and seemed like best choice for what I was looking for. Now that he's had it for about a month, all I can say is best. gift. ever.

Here's my thoughts on it in case you've been thinking of getting your own little reader an e-reader.

AMAZON'S KINDLE KIDS EDITION vs. KINDLE FIRE

A friend of mine decided to do the same gift idea for her son for Christmas, but went with the Kindle Fire for Kids instead. After chatting with her about it, I was curious. She brought her son's over one day for me to play with, and I was so impressed. Our kids all have iPads, but for the cost and the set-up, the Kindle Fire hands down is the better choice in my opinion.

If we didn't already have iPads for the kids, I would have pulled the trigger on the Kindle Fires. They are easy to navigate, already come with a ton of age appropriate apps, a protective cover, and have an excellent warranty. It's a no brainer at less than a third of the cost.

Ultimately I decided to stick with the Kindle Kids Edition. We already have iPads and I wanted him to have a device that was strictly for reading and not worry about him getting on YouTube or Netflix or anything else.

Size Comparison: Kindle Paperwhite vs. Kindle Kids Edition

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THE KINDLE FOR KIDS

I have the latest Kindle Paperwhite, and thought about just purchasing him that option, but then I realized what a better deal the Kindle Kids Edition was.

  1. Cover Options are included.  It comes with a protective cover when purchased, so you don't have anything additional to buy. With the Paperwhite I still had to buy a cover as an extra. There are four cover options to choose from.
  2. Amazon Free Time is included free for one year.  A Free Time Unlimited subscription allows a Kindle user to have unlimited access to books, magazines, Audibles, movies, and shows. The Paperwhite offers a free subscription with purchase for up to three months, but the Kindle for Kids edition comes with a free one-year subscription. It also allows for the Kids version to switch back and forth between reading the story and the Audible version for free.

I was nervous the subscription would just be a few books, but it includes a ton of popular titles and almost any book a kid would really want to read. For example, the entire Harry Potter Series comes with the subscription.

I haven't done a cost analysis since we've only owned it a month, but I'm guessing if you have an avid reader the yearly savings would be huge. (Free Time increases to $2.99/month for Prime users and $4.99/month for non-members after the free subscription period ends. It can be cancelled anytime.)
  3. Security. As with any electronic device these days, parents have to worry about security on multiple levels. The device works off wi-fi, but there isn't any chatting, etc. available. I also control purchases and what content he views from my own account. He can independently search and download within the parameters I set him and his reading level, but anything outside of that has to get permission from me. Super simple to set up and use, and very easy to alter if needed.
  4. Free Replacement if damaged. The Kindle Kids Edition comes with a 2-year worry free guarantee. If anything happens to it within two years of purchase it can be replaced for free. That alone makes it worth it because...well, kids.
  5. Wireless headphone capable. Total first world problem, but I can't stand untangling cords. The kids could care less how many knots are in them, but it drives me nuts. With just a click of a button their wireless headphones were able to be connected. (We own these inexpensive ones.)
  6. Battery Life. Battery life for the Kindle Kids Edition is excellent. We've had to charge it once in the past month. That's with at least an hour of use daily. It takes four hours for it to get a full charge.
  7. No distractions. I love that the device is just set up for reading and listening to books. No distractions from apps or games. No commercials or ads for those things either. Just reading.

  8. It's small. Just like my Paperwhite, the Kindle Kids Edition is pretty small. Think the size of a small paperback. I was nervous it would be too small after being used to a larger tablet for so many years, but I actually like the smaller size. For travel it is excellent because it doesn't take up any room and is light enough that kids can carry it around with out it making their bags heavier.

I will add things to this list as we navigate through new features or anything else new we learn. The only con I can see so far is that the screen is only black and white. The lighting is excellent, and our son hasn't complained about the lack of color, but in some books I can see where color for younger readers might help (especially when they are still looking at photos for reading cues).

Hope this helps anyone thinking of getting a Kindle Kids Edition for their own little reader, or if you were needing a great gift idea!

Books to Get Boys Reading

Book suggestions for elementary school aged boys

Okay this is totally one of those posts where I give you a little something and I hope you give me a little something. I need some major suggestions on books that help get boys to enjoy reading. More specifically - Cute reading. We've found a few books here and there that he seems into, and I'll share those, but I am up for any and all suggestions you guys have got!

This is Cute's last week of first grade and all year we have been on the struggle bus when it comes to encouraging him to read. Don't get me wrong. He loves books and stories, and being read to. But when it comes to reading himself? He has other more important things he feels he has to do.

If school were based on Lego building skills, ability to score soccer goals, solve multiplication problems, drawing ninjas with friends, or running the fastest during P.E. he would be an ace student. He excels in all other subjects, and I know he'll get there at some point. Reading is life skill you just need, kind of like tying your shoes (and that's a subject we'll save for another day), but he just feels zero desire to take any part in it.

So in the spirit of the "summer slide" I was hoping to get a little insight into what books you might suggest to keep him motivated. I have stumbled upon a few these last few months that seem to keep him interested and a few he gets excited about. So maybe this can be a bench mark for suggestions too?

I can't be the only mom on the struggle reading bus! So share any and all - you never know who it might help!

Books boys love! Great book suggestions for elementary aged students. Book series for kids in elementary school.

BOOKS THAT BOYS LOVE

(Or at least my little boy!)

Captain Underpants Series - Underwear and potty talk. Need I say more? This is full of potty style humor and has tons of illustrations to put a visual to the story. It makes Cute literally laugh out loud. We even watched the Captain Underpants movie as a reward after he finished the first one. Do I like potty talk? No. But do I like my son being interested in reading? Absolutely. Plus it's such a huge series, I'm not the only parent hearing all about giant potty people or Booger Boy. (Seriously, those are things.)

Dog Man Series - This series is written by the same author as the Captain Underpants books, so a similar type of humor, but with less actual potty talk. It follows a police officer who is half dog/half man and his crime fighting adventures. The pages are filled with comic style photos and Cute loves the flip-o-ramas included.  So far this seems to be the series he's gotten the most excited about, and he's already excited about the Lord of the Fleas that comes out this August.

The Bad Guys Series - This series is fun! This follows the notorious "bad characters" of various tales (think Big Bad Wolf), and changes it up a bit. The bad guys all team up together to do good deeds, and each story follows their mishaps along the way. Cute has a few books in this series he grabbed from the book fair and even though there are less photos he still enjoys reading them a ton.

Inspector Flytrap Series - This one we recently grabbed while running errands. It's a mystery series where the main character is a Venus Flytrap. It seems funny, but Cute hasn't sat down to read it through it's entirety. It has a few pictures in it, and tons of silliness so hoping he ends up liking this short series too.

Mighty Marvel Chapter Books - We've had these for awhile, and while some of the words are tough it's a super hero book and in some boys' world that's all they need to motivate them. Cute loves look at these over and over and his teacher let him keep one in his desk all year to read whenever he liked.

Magic Tree House Series - Several people have suggested these to me, and my mom purchased a few of them for Cute. I know there are tons of books in this series, and while Cute likes these being read to him, he hasn't been consistent quite yet on reading them on his own. There aren't as many photos as there are in other series so that could be the drawback?

The Stink Series - Cute owns one book in this series, and he reads through it often, but when asked he doesn't seem interested in looking at another. The book series is based on Judy Moody's little brother, and follows him on some silly adventures. A super funny little series!

Pedro Series - Cute originally grabbed two of the books in this series because one is about being in first grade, and one is about soccer - two of his main interests this year. The book series is cute and kind of showcases the main character, Pedro, in some scenarios that make him uncomfortable and shares how he handles them. Filled with great messages for this age group!

Okay, that's all I have in my boy book arsenal. What are some of your suggestions?

Children's Book Club: Shark Attack!

It's Shark Week, and our kids are obsessed! Every time we turn around they are turning on the Discovery Channel to see what sharks are terrorizing swimming the ocean waters at that moment. Sharks are serious business year round in this house though, and through some of our summer adventures, it seems like the excitement about those toothy sea creatures has been amplified.

Cute came home from our family vacation, and wanted to read anything and everything about sharks.

From fiction to non-fiction he soaks up every. single. word. Now I know way more about sharks than I ever wanted to in my life.

You might find us sticking to pools from now on.

We got our shark loving little boys (and girls!) together and asked them to pick their favorite shark themed books. They were so excited about this task and made sure to pick the "very best and baddest" shark books.

10 FAVORITE SHARK BOOKS FOR KIDS

  1. Sharks Discovery Kids - This is one of our favorites! It has realistic photos, tons of great facts, and a peek at a variety of different sharks that are swimming in the ocean.
  2. The Shark Who Learned a Lessson - This story follows Shadow the Shark, who sadly has become the ocean bully. The creatures of the ocean ban together and show Shadow a different way to be.
  3. Clark the Shark - This is the original in the "Clark the Shark" series. Clark is a rambunctious little shark just trying to fit in at school. The series follows the lessons that Clark has to learn along the way. Great for any young school aged child!
  4. Nugget & Fang - Nugget and Fang are the best of friends. Nugget goes to school and finds that his best friend is a little different. A great book to show young children even though we are all different we can all be friends.
  5. Finn Flips - Finn is a shark with lots of pep in his fins, but when he flips, all his ocean friends at Club Shark better watch out! A fun little story our early readers love!
  6. Hark! A Shark! - A rhyming shark book from our favorite Dr. Suess character - the Cat in the Hat. This is a fun little book to teach shark loving little ones facts about their favorite ocean creatures.
  7. Wild Kratts: Sharks, Whales & Dolphins! -  Our favorite animal loving duo share all about sharks, and some of the larger creatures they share the ocean with. A great way to show how sharks interact with their oceanic neighbors.
  8. If Sharks Disappeared - A great way to further the conversation of why we can't get rid of sharks even if they are sometimes scary.
  9. Shark Lady - This new to us story has quickly become a favorite of all of our kids. This follows the true story of Eugenie Clark, one of the world's greatest shark loving scientists. A fun story and lots of great facts.
  10. National Geographic Kids Everything Sharks - Part fact book and part activity book this is one of our shark loving little ones favorite shark books. It's great book for car rides and restaurant entertainment.

The are tons of great shark books for kids out there, but hopefully this list has narrowed it down for you!

And because it just happens to be "Shark Week" we are going to extend the shark filled fun by giving away one of our favorite shark tales. Pop over to Instagram to win your own copy of The Shark Who Learned a Lesson from Hawaiian children's book author Gil McBarnet

The giveaway will go live later today and the winner will be announced Sunday, July 30th.

Happy Shark Week everyone!

Children's Book Club: 7 Great Books to Celebrate Presidents' Day

Yes it's February and we should be dishing on all things L-O-V-E, but this year we are going to switch it up a bit. In year's past we've used this month's children's book club to share all about our favorite Valentine's Day books and activities, but we've always overlooked that other major holiday in February - Presidents' Day!

Over the last year or so our children have heard more than their fair share of all things Presidential. We keep our politics to ourselves, but you can't shield those little ears and eyes from every single thing. Those tiny ears hear everything. So today we are taking a break from all the adult political chaos, and put a little positivity out there for our pint sized future voters.

We've done the research and come up with some fun and factual presidential reads for our future little leaders!

  1. This Little President - A fun little rhyming book for our tiniest of future American leaders. This adorable little book give your reader a peek at ten of our most notable presidents across history.
  2. Duck for President - Part of the Click, Clack, Moo series that young readers love everywhere. A silly story of that wacky Duck and his path to presidency.
  3. If I Were President - A quick, yet broad peek at the branches of government and the duties that they president holds.
  4. The Presidential Masters of Prehistory - This one is for your dinosaur loving little ones. This fun book takes you on a prehistoric presidential adventure with all of your favorite presidents. Thomas Jeffersaurus is always a huge hit!
  5. "Who Is..." Series - The "Who Is..." series is perfect for older elementary school readers and gives a more in depth look at some of history's greatest and most influential leaders. With books on George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John F. Kennedy, and even Barak Obama - there is a little something for everyone.
  6. The Everything Presidents Book - An interactive book that takes the lesson one step further with fun games, puzzles and more!
  7. Chasing George Washington - A fun presidential style adventure for older elementary school readers. Follow students on a wild chase as a White House tour turns into something a little bit more.

Do you have a favorite kids book for President's Day? Or a fun book to help kids learn about politics? Share it with us!

Happy Reading!

Children's Book Club: Snowman Theme

Our kids have become seriously snow obsessed. Even more so since we had our snow days a few weeks ago. Now it's still January, but you would never know it since that last little speck of snow dried up it's been 70 degrees everyday. The summer lover in me is not complaining one tiny bit, but the kids...they are another story. They want snow!

So when we sat down to pick out what books to read to class this month, I was not surprised one little bit that they all had a snow theme to them.

The book There Was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow was my inspiration for the month's Children's Book Club. After reading it with The Cute's, I realized I had seen a fun idea for a treat that would pair well with the reading. The "Old Lady" series is always one that gets tons of giggles when we read it, so I knew the combo would be a huge hit!

This Month's Pick...

FROM THE BACK COVER
Here's the newest twist on the familiar tale of There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly.

There was a cold lady who swallowed some snow.
I don't know why she swallowed some snow.
Perhaps you know.

This time, the old lady is swallowing everything from snow to a pipe, some coal, a hat, and more! With rollicking, rhyming text and funny illustrations, this lively version will appeal to young readers with every turn of the page. And this time, there's a surprise at the end no reader will be able to guess!

And now for the treat to pair with it. This Melted Snowman Bark is my kind of treat - super easy and no-bake! The kids are also able to help on this one, which is always fun to see. Who knows what their snowman will look like!

Children's Book Club: How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Christmas is less than a week away! I can not believe it! But we are oh so excited, and SO THANKFUL that our break has officially kicked off!

Right before the break started, Cute's teacher decided to host a fun holiday party themed around How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Now you know we love our Christmas themed books - for both kids and adults - so we were excited to get to have a little fun with one of our long time favorites. The Cutes absolutely love reading The Grinch and watching The Grinch movies over and over.

It's been awhile since we've popped in for a little Children's Book Club post, but thought this fun time of year deserved a revival. If anything, it at least might give some a fun activity to do with with a classic favorite with all this icky rain and snow going on everywhere.

THE BOOK (in case for some crazy reason you've never heard of it!)

FROM THE BACK COVER
The ultimate Dr. Seuss Christmas classic -- no holiday season is complete without the Grinch, Max, Cindy-Lou, and all the residents of Who-ville!

“Every Who down in Who-ville liked Christmas a lot . . . but the Grinch, who lived just north of Who-ville, did NOT!” Not since “’Twas the night before Christmas” has the beginning of a Christmas tale been so instantly recognizable. This heartwarming story about the effects of the Christmas spirit will grow even the coldest and smallest of hearts. Like mistletoe, candy canes, and caroling, the Grinch is a mainstay of the holidays, and his story is the perfect gift for young and old.

And don't forget to celebrate Grinch-mas this Christmas season, the annual holiday tradition inspired by How the Grinch Stole Christmas that encourages readers to grow their hearts three sizes by doing good deeds!

THE ACTIVITY
My part for the party was to make a Grinch themed treat. After a Pinterest search (thanks Pinterest!), I decided to do Grinch themed Rice Krispy Treats. These were super quick and easy to make, which was key at the end of the semester!

Ingredients
- 1 Bag of marshmallows
- 3 tablespoons of butter
- 6 cups of Rice Krispy cereal
- Green food coloring
- One tube of red decorator's icing
- Wax paper

Directions
1: In a medium sized sauce pan melt the butter and marshmallows until well blended.
2: Add in green food coloring until desired color.
3: In large mixing bowl stir Rice Krispy cereal and marshmallow mixture together.
4: Place wax paper on a pan or a 9x12 dish.
5: Spread Rice Krispy mixture out evenly and let cool.
6: Once cooled, cut to desired size and then use frosting to make red heart.
7: Eat and enjoy!

See super easy! The hardest part is not eating the warm marshmallow mixture!

What is your children's favorite holiday book?
