Tips & Tricks to Keep Warm in During Weather Sports

Winter sports season is well underway. Spring sports season has officially kicked off for some, but Mother Nature hasn’t gotten the memo. Us moms cheering on the sidelines? We’re cold.

There’s nothing we love more than supporting our kids in the activities they love. Even if that means we will be cheering them on the sidelines in less than favorable conditions. This time of year, weather can pose a variety of threats, but as the old saying goes the show (or in this case the game) must go on. And so shall our warmth. Here’s some tried and true tricks and tips to keep warm the next time you’re cheering on the home team.

Tricks & Tips to Keep Warm During Cold Weather Sports

Get schooled in meteorology – Okay so maybe not be a full out meteorologist, but definitely make sure you understand the weather before you head to the fields. Aside from the obvious of checking the temperature, make sure you take a peek at the humidity. The more humidity in the atmosphere, the colder it will be. So 32 degrees with low humidity will feel a lot warmer than 32 degrees with higher humidity.

Dress in layers – Having the right cold weather gear for your little players is important. Same goes for you on the sidelines. Wearing the right layers can make all the difference in the world. Not just random layers – there’s an art to it. Our standard cheering section uniform is a light moisture-wicking base layer, regular clothes, fleece layer, all finished off with a good winter coat. By having the right layering system and keeping moisture away from your skin, you stay warmer.

Volunteer – We all have a ton going on right? Adding one more item into your schedule seems unthinkable. But notice who doesn’t seem cold (or at least as cold)? The players, the coaches, the team mom…It’s all because they are moving! One way to keep warm is to volunteer to help. Organizations are always looking for parent coaches or volunteers. So raise your hand, offer to help, and get moving. Because we can assure you, hot dog griller number one in the concession stand is never cold.

Stay hydrated – We worry about making sure our athletes are well hydrated, but remember you need to stay hydrated too. Even in the cold weather months. The more hydrated you are, the better your body is at regulating its temperature. So drink up soccer moms! (And we don’t mean that special “keep warm juice” you might have hidden in your purse.)

Wrap your seat, raise your feet! – The more insulation you can put between yourself and the ground or the bleachers the warmer you will be. We love these insulated stadium chairs for those cold bleachers. But if you don’t have one handy, wrap yourself in a warm wool blanket and then sit down. No seats available? Stand on a cooler or another raised surface to keep your feet off the cold ground.

HotHands, Warm…hands, feet, arms... – Bringing a portable heater isn’t possible (is it?!), so we resort to the next best thing – HotHands. These handy little heating packs are a life savor on those cold, blustery days. We’ve been known to grab a value pack and stick them over every available surface of our body. But placing them in your gloves and socks instantly warms your extremities, which warms your whole body too. So next time you’re at Costco, grab a box or three.

Everyday Organizing for Busy Moms {Just Say No}

It's hard for me to believe that we are almost half way through December already and that Christmas is almost here!!!  I've had so much fun with this series each month and I'm excited to share my final post in this Everyday Organizing for Busy Moms series.

We all know that December is crazy and the magic of the season only happens when us moms are the ones running around like crazy to get things checked off our lists.  We are all super moms when it comes down to it and try to do it all.  It's taken me a long time to accept that I can't do it all. During this busy season more than ever it is important to just say no. You can't be everywhere and do everything for everyone. It just isn't possible and if you do try you will end up driving yourself crazy and become so stressed and flustered that you can't even enjoy the Christmas season.  It's very likely that your schedule and to-do list is still going to be jam packed, but if there is something you can say no to, DO IT!!!  Taking just one thing off of your plate will help. Saying no also helps you prioritize your time and focus on the things that are really important!

I LOVED receiving this calendar from Happy Everything! this time last year as part of a collaboration.  Just like I shared in my first post of the series back in January, keeping a family calendar is a great way to stay organized and keep everyone on the same page. I loved that this one could easily be changed each month and the attachments make it fun and festive all year long!  As we gear up for the holidays and the New Year, if organization is part of your goals or resolutions, I would check out all of the dry erase collection and seasonal attachments from Happy Everything!. It would make a great to me from me type of gift to yourself!

That's a wrap on this series. It's been a fun one for 2022 and I hope it's been helpful to some of you!

Everyday Organizing for Busy Moms {Delegate and Accept Help}

November is here!  The first week always flies by because we are in a post-Halloween hangover and Halloween being on a Monday this year didn't help!  I'm so happy for November though because that means the holidays are just a few short weeks away!  I haven't decorated for Christmas just yet, but as soon as I have a few free hours that is what I plan to do. Until then, we are enjoying all things Thanksgiving and turkey.

A new month means a new post up in the Everyday Organizing for Busy Moms series.  This month I'm talking about delegating and accepting help.  This one isn't easy for me. I'm sort of a control freak who likes things done a certain way. I'm a I'll-just-do-it-myself kind of person because I know it will be done and be done right. However, I've learned that it is literally impossible for moms to to do it all so I've been forced to delegate some tasks and accept help for others.

Delegating usually comes in the form of me telling my kids things they need to do.  Some call it nagging, I call it building character. In all seriousness though, I'm their mom, not their maid. I expect them to help with certain tasks around the house and time to time there are things I just need them to do.

Asking for and accepting help is a big one! This is almost always in the form of carpool for me because with three kids it is just logistically hard to get everyone where they need to be. Add in a husband that travels for work and it becomes nearly impossible. I had a realization one day though that anytime someone asked me to give their kid a ride I was always happy to help out because I know what it was like when you just don't have another option.  I am ALWAYS willing to say yes if someone asks me for help so I finally started doing the same.  Organizing carpools with teammates and friends has been a lifesaver and really was the only way to make it work if my kids didn't want to start having to missing things.  I always hated asking (and still do), but it really does make life easier on us moms and is the only way when you've got multiple kids going multiple directions. So my biggest piece of advice to you is don't be afraid to ask another mom for help.  Chances are she would love to help and will likely ask you for help in return. A win-win!

That's it for this month. I can't believe only one more month left in 2022!!!

Everyday Organizing for Busy Moms {Stockpile Supplies}

October is here!!!  I love the fall and October is one of my favorite months. As a child Halloween was always one of my favorite holidays, I love all the pumpkins, and it's the start of the holiday season. SO much to love about October.  October is also a VERY busy month for us.  It's usually the time that fall sports begin to overlap with winter sports so there are added practices which is always fun in the game I like to call How will I get everyone where they need to be?

A new month means a new post in the Everyday Organizing for Busy Moms series.  This month is about stockpiling supplies and no I don't mean hoarding toilet paper like the early Covid days.  I'm talking about school supplies, gifts, and other things to keep on hand that will make you life a little easier.

It's usually around this time of the school year that my kids end up running out of things.  They either need new mechanical pencils, index cards, or even just notebook paper.  I have a bin of school supplies like these that I keep in our hall closet so that when someone needs something I'm not running out to the store every time.  I also keep several sheets of poster board on hand because it never fails there is a project or something due I find out about at the last minute.

Generic birthday cards and gift cards are also great to have on hand.  Between three kids we get a lot of birthday party invites and while we do special gifts for close friends, often times a gift card is what everyone wants and it's just as easy for me to buy a pack of three when I'm picking them up so I have the extras on hand at home.

Just when I thought the days of playing dress-up were over, the teenage years are proving me wrong!  As the kids get older there are all sorts of themed practices, spirit theme days, and football games to dress up for.  I keep all of our costume accessories and popular theme dress-up things stockpiled together.  Sort of like the grown up version of the dress-up basket that used to live in our play room. Of course I have had to buy some things for the special days, but I always make sure to put everything back in one place when they are done with it so when the next themed day rolls around, I know right where to send them to hunt for the perfect piece instead of re-buying each time.

Another thing I try to always keep stockpiled are snacks and drinks.  I love for my kids to have friends over and I want them to always feel comfortable with lots of snack and drink options. I try to keep our basement and drink fridge stocked with waters, sports drinks, and sodas and I always get individually packaged snacks to keep in our pantry and in the basement so the kids can always have a variety of things to choose from.

The last thing I keep stockpiled are toiletries, medicines, toothbrushes, and stuff like that.  I'll usually stock up when they are on sale so I always have a back up or two in the closet or under the bathroom cabinet for when we run out. It just makes life easier to not feel the need to rush to the store when someone is out of something.

Do you keep anything stockpiled at your house?  Share with me in the comments!

Everyday Organizing for Busy Moms {Do A Last Sweep}

Happy September!  We're gearing up for football this month and love that fall is just around the corner. It's a new month and time for another post in the Everyday Organizing for Busy Moms series.

By now most everyone is back to school and in some sort of a routine with sports, homework, and busy weeknights.  I've always been a night owl, but the older I get there are times that I'm ready to go to bed before my teenagers. However, I often force myself to power through and get a second wind or at least make them head up to their rooms before me because not only do I enjoy a few minutes of sitting in the quiet house alone, but before I let myself sit down I think it's so important to do a last sweep each night.

The last sweep for me is spending 5-10 minutes picking up the house, putting things back in their place, and just making sure everything is prepped and ready for the next day. Doing this helps our mornings go as smoothly as possible and helps keep the house tidy. None of my kids are morning people (and neither am I) so doing as much the night before is key for us to getting out the door on time and for myself to just go to bed with a sense of calmness.

In the evenings I always make sure lunches are packed, dishes are done, the house is picked up. I make sure the kids have their backpacks and clothes/cleats/equipment for after school practices ready. I also do a mental checklist of the next day and plan it as much as possible. If I have errands to run or things to do around the house I plan that along with the sports practice carpools and logistics so I'm not scrambling the next day.

I do make my kids put their things away and pick up after themselves on a regular basis, but during the week we are often rushing from one thing to the next and the time they are at home I want them studying or sleeping so shoes get left out, school papers end up on the counter, water bottles are everywhere and it starts to drive me crazy. A neat house makes me feel calm so me doing a quick last sweep each night and having everything in its place before laying my head on the pillow helps me tremendously!

Everyday Organizing for Busy Moms {Stay on top of it!}

We survived the first week of August which around here means the first week of school! I'm jealous of the people who get a few more weeks of summer, because our kids started back on Monday! It's going to take a little while to get back into the groove of getting up early, but so far we are off to a great start.  It's time for this month's post in the Everyday Organizing for Busy Moms series.

This month's topic is how to stay on top of it all! Three different school schedules and multiple fall sports makes our fall extremely busy. One week in and I already feel like I have filled out a million forms, gotten a ton of school emails, added hundreds of things to my to-do list, and my sports scheduling app notifications haven't stopped. It's enough to make your head spin and certainly easy to feel like you are drowning in the overload of information. Staying on top of it all is more important than ever at the start of the school year so I thought I would share some tips!

Avoid Procrastination
My first and most important tip for staying on top of it all is to avoid procrastination!  If you have an email or alert come through asking you to sign an online form, make a payment, RSVP to an event, etc....do it right away.  It might not be convenient to stop what you are doing, but I promise taking two minutes to take care of that task is going to save you feeling like you are drowning in the overload of to-do's in a few days.

Write it down right away!
Can't take care of something right away?  At least write it down right away.  Add it to your to-do list so you can be reminded of it later.

When you get a notification from one of the many sports apps we all use for various teams, add it to your calendar right away.

Thinking to yourself, "I'll do that later when I get home" will likely not happen and it will end up causing more stress and confusion in the long run.

Manage Emails

A lot of people have their own ideas and systems for managing their emails, but after talking to a friend the other day I realized not everyone does! A lot of information comes through email and it can be overwhelming to sort through it all.

If I read an email and know that it requires something of me that I can't do right at that moment I mark the email as unread. That way I know to go back to it later and it won't get buried in my inbox. When I finally sit down at my computer or look on my phone later in the day that little blue dot beside the unread emails easily shows me something I need to read or take care of.

I am also an email saver.  I know some people like to delete and be done with it, but I save anything that I think might be handy info down the road and it aways proves to be helpful! I have folders in my inbox for so many things...each kid's school year, every sports team, house stuff, etc.

I recently needed to call the air conditioning repair company and couldn't find the number, but I knew I had saved the invoice he sent me from the last time so I was able to quickly find it.

I needed to check the time for a meeting at the school and because I saved the newsletter I was able to pull it up quickly instead of having to try to navigate the website to search for it.

It just makes it so much easier to go back and quickly find what I need!

I'm sure there are lots of other tips for staying on top of it all during back to school time, but those are the ones that work best for me. Managing multiple kids' school and sports things, along with everything for the house is a lot of work, but I promise staying on top of it will help make it more manageable. Hope everyone has a great start to their school year!

Everyday Organizing for Busy Moms {Paper Planners}

Happy July!!!  I realize this post is way overdue, but better late than never, right? Between really slow WiFi on vacation and just a busy summer schedule, everything is taking a little longer than normal.  It's finally time for this month's post in the Everyday Organizing for Busy Moms series.

The topic today is something I feel VERY passionately about...the use of a paper planner.

I know there are lots of digital options and I've tried keeping my calendar on my phone, but with 3 kids going in 3 different directions, plus all of my obligations on top of that, I have found that a paper planner is the way to go.  Some people make fun of me and I know it is sort of old school, but I promise you it will change your life if you can make yourself use it.

I prefer to use an academic planner, one that runs July-June, because in my brain, that is how the year goes.  Our schools start the first of August, so July is when all of the back to school events and, beginning of sports things start.

I used to spend a lot on Erin Condren planners each year and loved them, but decided that a smaller size would be better because I can keep it in my purse and always have it with me.  Each summer I order one from Amazon and they work out perfectly!  My only requirements are the size (around 6x8), the fact that it runs July-June and that it has a weekly view.

Last year I had this one and this year I went with this one. It is under $10 and the best money you will ever spend.   Both have served me well!  I write everything in my planner.  Kids sports schedules, upcoming tests to help the kids with, appointments, blog deadlines, reminders of things I need to do on certain days, everything!

I sometimes try to color coordinate, but it's not always pretty. I mark things out, highlight items, cross over things, white-out things and it is often a big mess.  It might not make sense to anyone else that looks at it, but the most important thing is that it makes sense to your brain.  I spend a little time at the beginning of each month to write down regular weekly practice times and ongoing items for that month, but then obviously as things are scheduled in advance I ALWAYS go ahead and write it down so I don't forget down the road.

When I read Monica Aldama's book one of the tips she shared for being successful was to have a cheap planner that you can write things down in and I was like, she gets it!

Seriously though, I know this method isn't for everyone and some people love their digital calendars.  I'm just offering this as a suggestion if you are struggling to keep up with it all because it 1000% works for me!

Everyday Organizing for Busy Moms {Meal Planning & Grocery Lists}

 Happy June!!! Hello sunshine, hello summer. I've never been happier for a summer. May just about did me in so I was really happy to welcome summer break at our house.

June marks about halfway through the year, halfway through the fun themed calendar pics, and a new post in the Everyday Organizing for Busy Moms series.

This month is all about meal planning and grocery lists.  I ran into a friend at the grocery store last week and and we were talking about how much food our kids consume now that they are home for summer! It felt like the perfect time to cover these topics.

Meal Planning

When some people hear meal planning they might think might think that is something elaborate.  I'm sure it could be because I know there are apps and calendars and all sorts of ways to keep up with this. However, for me it is literally figuring out the "What's for dinner?" question one week at a time and writing it down so I can keep track and have a general idea throughout the week.

It's often written on the back of my grocery lists and I usually think about this on Sunday so I can plan for the week. Sometimes it changes during the week and it is always generally based on how our evenings looks. If the Mr. is out of town and everyone has practice, you better believe Chick-fil-a is written down for that night. I might not actually be cooking, but that night's meal is planned for!  Sometimes it will change as our plans change, but at least when I head to the grocery store on Sunday or Monday I have what I need to get dinner going the nights that we are actually home.

I usually plan for Monday - Friday.  On Friday I will regroup and reassess what our weekend will look like. Who has sleepovers, are we hanging at the pool and grilling or going out with friends?  I often don't know our weekend plans so I do a mini meal planning session if we'll be home for the weekend.

Grocery Lists

Some people keep elaborate grocery lists, spreadsheets, have lists on their phones or tell their Alexa to add it to a list.  I'm old school though so I keep a notepad by the fridge and constantly add to it when I think of something we need or when we run out of pantry staples. Even though I'd like to think I would remember when I am actually at the store, I know won't.

The best thing I have trained my kids to do is to add to the grocery list.
Their favorite snack is gone and they want me to get more? Add it to the list.
They need more toothpaste? Add it to the list.
Want to bake with friends and need supplies?  Add it to the list.

It's easy to pick out what they add, but I don't mind! They've stopped requesting things in person because they just know I'm going to tell them to go write it down for me. It's actually like a magical list.  They write it down and it appears in our fridge or pantry. This method ensures everyone gets what they want/need and it saves me from making multiple trips to the store.

Although this summer I do feel like I'm making more trips than normal, but I'm totally fine with it! I'm just happy for them to be home, having friends over, and enjoying the short, but sweet summer break we have!

Everyday Organizing for Busy Moms {Laundry and Dishes}

May is for Moms and Margaritas!!! Yay for May!!! A new month means new calendar pictures and a new post in the Everyday Organizing for Busy Moms series.

I mentioned this on Instagram stories last week, but May is one of those months that just seems to FLY by without even realizing it. Between end of the year school stuff, end of season sports stuff, and just regular life it often feels like a whirlwind!  Keeping up with everyday chores like laundry and dishes might not seem like a big deal, but I've found that not keeping up with it is when you really get into trouble. This topic is really not exciting at all, but I thought I'd share a little about how I keep up with the laundry and dishes in the hopes that even one of these tips might help one of you.

Laundry

1. I know some people like to wait and do all the laundry in one day, but I'm not one of those people. I have found that doing at least one load everyday is best for my family.

2. In most cases, I wash everyone's clothes separately meaning I don't wash two of my kids clothes together. This makes it so much easier for folding and putting away because I don't have to figure out who's socks are who's and which pair of shorts belongs to which kid.

3. When I fold clothes I always listen to an audio book.  I despise folding and putting away clothes, but when I'm listening to a book I hardly realize that I'm doing it and it makes the time go by so much faster.

4. Speaking folding and putting away, I only put away mine and the Mr.'s. I'm happy to do my kids laundry for them, but they each put it away and have been doing so since a really young age. I have several laundry baskets so I put each person's clothes in their own basket and usually place it outside their bedroom door during the day. The rule in my house is you have to put it away sometime that day (before bed). If I don't enforce that they just keep the basket full of clothes in their room and dig through it when they are looking for something to wear.  Plus, I need the baskets back for the next round of laundry.

5. Make your washer work for you when you aren't around.  I always set it to run when I'm doing something else or when I'm about to leave the house to run errands so I'm not sitting around waiting on it to finish.  Then when I get home I can throw things in the dryer.  Also, most newer washers have a delayed wash setting. I love this feature! If I don't want wet clothes sitting in the washer for hours I can time when I will be back home and set it on a delayed start so it is done right before I will be getting home. Sometimes I will also set it to begin during the night so it is done first thing in the morning and I can toss things in the dryer when I get up.

6. There are a lot of items that I don't put in the dryer and instead air dry.  I used to find all sorts of crazy places to lay them to dry and then I got really smart and spent about $20 on THIS drying rack.  Why I hadn't done this before is beyond me, but my girls and I keep this thing in constant use. I lay items like swimsuits, sports bras, Lululemon, and other items I don't want to worry about shrinking on this and then often just toss them in the dryer for a few minutes after they are dry to "fluff" them before putting them away.

Dishes

1. Use the dishwasher!  The Mr. and I disagree on this, but I put just about everything in the dishwasher.  Big mixing bowls, Tupperware, pots/pans, all of it. I love the dishwasher and don't mind if a big bowl is taking up the spots that 5 plates could fit.  I'm not having to wash/dry it so I'm happy to load it up with everything that I can.

2. Run your dishwasher every night. It's one of those tasks I usually do before going to bed or just after we finish dinner. I like to run it each night and unload it each morning, generally while the kids are eating breakfast. This way you aren't stuck in the middle of the day with a full dishwasher because if that happens you would either end up leaving dirty dishes in the sink or hand washing them. Instead, if you run it each night, unload each morning, and fill it up throughout the day it keeps the rhythm going nicely.

I know this wasn't the most exciting topic, but a necessary one because it's something that all of us deal with.  I hope some of these tips helped some of you and if you have any tips to share, I'd love to hear them because let's be honest, the laundry and dishes aren't going away!

Everyday Organizing for Busy Moms {Declutter}

Happy April!!!  A new month means a new themed calendar photo!

April is a big month for us with lots of big events happening. Spring Break, The Masters, my middle's 13th birthday, a baseball tournament, high school cheer tryouts, Easter and The Summit cheerleading competition.  Whew...I'm just tried thinking about it and I know it's going to fly by because we will be so busy all month long.

When our family is super busy the house can often get super messy.  Things get thrown around in the rush to go from one thing to the next and "stuff" on counters and tables starts to make me go bananas. I have come to learn that having my house neat and orderly makes me feel calmer while clutter around my house makes me feel anxious and out of sorts. That's not to say I don't have messy areas in the house, but they are contained and often out of sight!

1. Have a place for everything: One of the best ways I have found to combat the clutter is to have a place for everything.  My kids are constantly unable to find things and I always tell them if they put it back where it belongs they wouldn't have trouble finding it.

2. Sort mail/papers immediately: Another thing I find helpful is to sort mail and school papers as soon as they come in the house. Junk mail immediately gets thrown in the trash, bills get put in my planner for the date they need to be paid, coupons I might use get put in my purse and papers from school with information or reminders I need get put on my pin board.

3. Let the decluttering trickle to your kids: Chances are your kids are some of the biggest culprits when it comes to the junk. I try to get my kids on board with helping declutter and while it doesn't always come natural to them sometimes I just make them do it. We have cubbies in our mudroom that tend to always start overflowing with stuff and I also make them clean and organized their rooms at least once a week.

4. Get rid of the stuff: For some this is easier said than done, but cleaning out items you don't use on a regular basis can help free up space and make your house less cluttered. There are certainly sentimental items that I hold on to that I probably shouldn't, but overall I'm good with being done with an item and either throwing stuff away or donating items on a regular basis.

5. Keep a donate bag/bin: I keep a large donate bag in my closet that I use to put clothes/shoes the kids have outgrown, household items I don't use anymore, or anything else I want to donate.  When the bag is full I go drop it off and start a new bag.

6. Don't forget your car: If you are anything like me, you probably spend a lot of time in your car. The car can quickly become a mess and filled with clutter.  I try to grab trash everytime I get out of the car and ask my kids to take in anything that they have brought to the car that doesn't belong there.

How do you combat the clutter in your homes?
