On Sunday we shared that we are helping host the Savvy Sassy Moms Holiday Blog Hop and this week the theme is Kids' Crafts.
Today I'm sharing one of my favorite crafts for kids at the holidays and linking up with the Blog Hop. Be sure to include your links if you haven't already done so!
I'm a sucker for homemade ornaments and just love all of the crafts the kids bring home from school. I even have hand-made ornaments that I made as a child and that my mom saved for me. Our Christmas tree is far from t a designer tree. Instead if holds ornaments that we have collated over the years either as gifts or that we have purchased on trips or that the kids have made. Each one holds a special memory and as we decorate each year it's like taking a walk down memory lane.
A few years ago Blondie brought home an ornament she had made in her Pre-K class that I just LOVED!
It was so colorful and so beautiful and she kept going on and on about how much fun it was to make so I though I would get the supplies so we could recreate it ourselves. That year we made them for grandparents and other family members, but every single year the kids always want to make more and we can always find someone to make them for!
To make this ornament you will need styrofoam balls, ball head straight pins (usually used for sewing), colorful beads and sequins in a variety of colors and shapes.
I always put the supplies in small bowls and line them up for the kids.
First the kids will select a pin and I instruct them to hold it straight up and down. Next they add a bead onto the pin, followed by a sequin. Lastly they push the pin into the styrofoam ball.
They keep repeating this process over and over until the ball is covered with beautiful colors! This is a wonderful fine-motor project and I've had kids as young as 3 making these all the way up to adults. Y'all might be worried about the straight pins, but my little Boo-Boo did great job with it last year and even better this year! As long and the kids know that the ends are sharp and that they need to be careful they should be fine. My kids always like to work on these a little at a time, so I keep the supplies set up so they can add to their ornaments as they wish. All they need to do is keep repeating the pin, bead, sequin process over and over until the ball is covered in beautiful colors!
When they are done I use a T-pin to add ribbon to the ornament so that it can either hang on a Christmas tree or even in a window somewhere.
When these hang on a Christmas tree the lights really shine on the beads and sequins making it sparkle and shine so beautifully!
