Cocktail Confessions: The Kentucky Oaks Lily

Last week I shared all about our trip to the Kentucky Derby and the amazing time we had.  While Mint Juleps are the official drink of the Derby, they aren't really my favorite, so I was excited to learn about another drink that is served at Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Oaks Lily.

Here's the deal, the Kentucky Oaks is run on the day before the Derby.  We did not attend this year, but it draws a pretty big crowd and in most recent years they have partnered with an organization to raise money for Breast Cancer.  Everyone wears pink to the Oaks in honor of those women and to help support the cause. Also, the winner of the Kentucky Oaks is adorned with beautiful pink Lilies instead of roses like at the Derby.  So, this drink was created and is the signature drink of that day.  Lucky for gals like me that prefer something a bit sweeter (and pink!), this drink is also served on the day of the Derby.  You just have to know to ask for it.

I knew I wanted to recreate it at home so I asked our bartenders that day to share the recipe and they gladly did.

The Kentucky Oaks Lily
1 oz Vodka
1 oz Sweet and Sour Mix
3 oz Cranberry juice
Splash of Triple Sec

Earlier this week as I was watching my kids play outside after dinner I enjoyed sipping on my own Lily!

I mean it was almost the same as being at the Derby.  Almost.  Except instead of watching horse racing dressed up in fancy outfits I was watching my kiddos horse around while I was dressed in my yoga pants.  A mom can dream, right? At least I had a pretty backdrop of flowers for my homemade Lily just like I did at the Derby.  Cheers to all the moms and happy Friday!
