Cocktail Confessions: The Kentucky Oaks Lily

Last week I shared all about our trip to the Kentucky Derby and the amazing time we had.  While Mint Juleps are the official drink of the Derby, they aren't really my favorite, so I was excited to learn about another drink that is served at Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Oaks Lily.

Here's the deal, the Kentucky Oaks is run on the day before the Derby.  We did not attend this year, but it draws a pretty big crowd and in most recent years they have partnered with an organization to raise money for Breast Cancer.  Everyone wears pink to the Oaks in honor of those women and to help support the cause. Also, the winner of the Kentucky Oaks is adorned with beautiful pink Lilies instead of roses like at the Derby.  So, this drink was created and is the signature drink of that day.  Lucky for gals like me that prefer something a bit sweeter (and pink!), this drink is also served on the day of the Derby.  You just have to know to ask for it.

I knew I wanted to recreate it at home so I asked our bartenders that day to share the recipe and they gladly did.

The Kentucky Oaks Lily
1 oz Vodka
1 oz Sweet and Sour Mix
3 oz Cranberry juice
Splash of Triple Sec

Earlier this week as I was watching my kids play outside after dinner I enjoyed sipping on my own Lily!

I mean it was almost the same as being at the Derby.  Almost.  Except instead of watching horse racing dressed up in fancy outfits I was watching my kiddos horse around while I was dressed in my yoga pants.  A mom can dream, right? At least I had a pretty backdrop of flowers for my homemade Lily just like I did at the Derby.  Cheers to all the moms and happy Friday!

Have a Slammin' Summer!

The countdown is on and we are just a few days away from school. For weeks now our calendar has been filled with end of school year festivities. Field days, art shows, and now it's time for the final hurrah - the last day of school!

Little Cute celebrates her last day tomorrow. On her field day she and her classmates each exchanged fun summer gifts. She came up with the idea to give each of her friends some fun squirt guns. The last day of school is going to be extremely low key filled with lots of playground play and movie watching.

A few of us are sending in some yummy snacks for the kids to enjoy through out the day. I know I won't have time to make anything homemade, so I went for the next best easiest thing - a pouch snack!

Yummy, organic and healthy snack for older kids. Packed with protein, fruits, and vegetables.

My kids love these Slammers snack pouches.  They taste yummy, and they always try to copy what the kid on the front of their pouch snack is doing when they eat them. (Where/how this started I have no idea, but they think it's a fun game.)

Great organic kids fruit snack pouches. Great snack option for older kids! Packed with protein!

I love them because...
1: It's a pouch snack! Hello super easy, mess free and healthy snack!
2: The kids have no idea they are eating a healthy serving of organic fruits, vegetables and protein each time they consume one. My kids think these are a huge treat! (And what mom would I be if I spoiled that joy for them?)

I have a hard time keeping them in the pantry so sometimes I have to hide them so they won't eat an entire box in a day. So, I knew L.C. would be excited to bring them into class for her friends, and I know her teachers will be excited that it doesn't contain frosting, candy, or - their personal favorite - frozen treats on a stick.

Fun printable for the end of the school year. Great way to kick off summer with a treat!

I whipped up this fun "Slammin'" themed printable to coordinate with the pouches. (Note: You can't tell in photos, but there is an outline of an electric guitar behind the wording as well.)

With a quick attachment with some gold and black curling ribbon they are ready to go.

We are all set to celebrate and we can't wait to check off the last day of preschool for the school year!

Kitchen Confessions: Favorite Side Dishes

Our Mother's Day was a busy one this year filled with two soccer games and a baseball tournament game. Some people may not think this is the ideal way to spend Mother's Day, but for me, I wouldn't have wanted to do anything else.  I just love watching my kiddos do what they love and this day was perfect!

First up was Boo-Boo's baseball game. His team played great, but lost so they are officially out of the tournament now and his season is over. He told me he wasn't sad, but he was disappointed because he didn't want it to be over! After the game they gave each of the boys a rose to give their moms which was so very sweet.

Then we headed over to catch Blondie's 2nd soccer game where she ran hard and played her little heart out!

After that we were ready to come home, get out of the heat, and relax!  We had Jen and  her family over for dinner on Friday night, but a crazy allergic reaction sent me to urgent care with Boo-Boo so instead of grilling out as planned, we ended up ordering pizza. That just meant that I still had a yummy dinner sitting in my fridge that we were able to cook on Mother's Day instead. It ended up being two of my favorite sides - roasted sweet potatoes and crunchy Asian slaw.  These are two of my go-to sides, especially when we grill out.

Roasted Sweet Potatoes
This side takes a little bit of planning just because it takes a while to cook, but it is so worth it!  I can't even say it is a recipe I'm sharing because it really is so simple. I just wash and cut sweet potatoes into large bite-sized pieces and place them in a large bag.

Next I add olive oil and a bunch of random seasonings (anything from salt/pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, rib rub, basil, parsley, etc. ...honestly anything I have in the cabinet).  I shake the bag to coat all of the potatoes.

Last I spread the potatoes on a cookie sheet I've sprayed and bake at 350 degrees for about 45-55 minutes.  That is it!  You do have to be careful and flip the potatoes every 15 minutes or so or they will burn on one side, but other than that, it's a super simple side!

Crunchy Asian Slaw
I've had a lot of different varieties of this dish, but they are all always so good and I love it because it is something you can make ahead of time and just toss with the dressing when you are ready to serve.  I've played around with mixing and matching several different recipes to find the right combo of what tastes best and the funniest thing that is in every one of them is uncooked ramen noodles. I know it sounds weird, but trust me...so good!  I've taken this side to potlucks and picnics and it is always a crowd pleaser.

Ingredients:
Bagged coleslaw mix
Bagged broccoli slaw mix
1 cup almonds
1/2 cup sunflower seeds
1 bunch green onions, chopped
2 packages Beef flavored Ramen Noodles
1/2 cup sunflower oil
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon worcestershire

Directions:
1. Combine bag of slaw mix, 1/2 bag broccoli slaw, green onions, almonds, and sunflower seeds.
2. Crush uncooked raman noodles and add to slaw.  Set aside flavor packets.
3. Prepare dressing with oil, vinegar, sugar, flavor packets from raman noodles and worcestershire sauce. Mix well, but note, all sugar may not dissolve.

4. Toss slaw with the dressing and serve!

What are some of your favorite sides for grilling out? Any easy, make-ahead sides you love?

A Buzz Worthy Bee Party

Life has been a little crazy lately, but that doesn't stop us from celebrating life. Flowers are blooming and bees are a buzzing - Spring is officially here! We took that inspiration and crafted a fun buzz worthy bee themed brunch for the littles.

Bee themed brunch for a birthday party or shower.

The bee theme was so much fun to play around with. We spotted these adorable miniature candy bumble bees, and the rest was easy!

Bee themed party and shower decor for spring.

Bright, cheery, and with a few personal touches everything came together for the perfect Spring celebration.

Bee party decor and free printables.

After brainstorming we realized there were so many fun bee themed foods that coordinate and require little to no effort. Yes, please! What do we like more than a well coordinated party? A well coordinated, easy party.

Bee themed brunch. Easy bee themed party food and drinks.

Even though we hosted this as a brunch, we realized how fun it would be for a wedding shower, baby shower, or even birthday party.

Friday Favorites

Shout it from the roof tops...IT'S FRIDAY!

Oh boy, this was one of those weeks. If I thought the rest of the school year was chaotic, this week put all those previous ones to shame. May might go down as the busiest month out of the year. And that's saying a lot. I mean, there's that whole December thing we have going on. But May...May makes December look like a breeze.

I saw this online and died laughing...

Don't get me wrong, they are all super fun events. But my brain is full. I blankly stared my way through Tae Kwan Do (more so than normal), and I flat forgot I had a meeting this week, but saved myself when I just happened to be passing the person running it in the hallway five minutes before it started.  #winning

It's all good though because today is Friday and we are going to rock the weekend. Tonight we have fun plans, Saturday is a little dicey on the schedule, but Sunday is Mother's Day and I plan on taking full advantage of that whole "mommy gets to sleep in late" thing that we all hope for every single this one day out of the year.

Before we kick off the weekend, as usual we are sharing some of our favorite finds for the week with some of our favorite bloggers for Friday Favorites

A while back the ladies at Savvy Sassy Moms sent us a little gift. In it was an assortment of fun items including this fun wine glass...

Considering my week, this was super fitting.

I shared this on Instagram and several of you asked where you could purchase this wine glass. I found the exact one, but it's sold out. In my search, I did find a few similar ones that are just as funny.
Humorous Mom Themed Wine Glasses

6. I Do Yoga...

Another one of my favorites was this top I wore to the concert last weekend. I found it when I popped into one of my favorite local boutiques - Findlay Rowe

I wish I had a better picture of it on me, but it is super cute. It has a fun ruffled neck and is the perfect tunic length.

It also comes in a fun flamingo pattern as well. I already know the next free moment I get I'm going to swing by and grab it for summer.

P.S. The bracelet is a favorite too. I know I mentioned it a few Fridays ago, but it bares repeating. Our friend Kathyrn makes the cutest stuff and it has been one of my favorite accessories lately.

Speaking of Kathryn...I was so excited when I spotted some of her goodies in one of our local shops!

I popped in this store called "And THAT" to grab a Teacher's Appreciation gift, and looked up to see her famous drink huggers

I've never been in the store before, but I've heard so many people talk about it. It's kind of across between a World Market and Hobby Lobby to me, but with a local twist. There were tons of locally made items, which I thought was fun. I'll definitely be popping in now and again. Not to mention prices were perfection.

And knowing they carry Kathryn's stuff is a bonus if I need to grab a gift in a pinch.

The drink huggers have been a long time favorite of ours. She just gets us.

In one of the previous pics, you can kind of see another favorite accessory of mine - my watch

Last week/weekend it cooled off a ton, but that didn't stop me from continuing the parade of my nautical theme wear for spring. I snagged this nautical inspired watch a few weeks ago, and have been pleasantly surprised at how often I've grabbed it to put on.

I own a ton of watches, and to stand out above the rest is saying a lot. I'll share more soon, but definitely one of my favorite pieces lately.

(Also pictured: Pullover (similar), tote, pants, flip flops.)

The Cutes have been so funny lately. They have gotten into their heads they would like to grow a vegetable garden. Mr. Cute does have a garden, but they wanted their own.

Cute saved his money and then brought it to the store to buy seeds. He really wanted to grow a "Halloween pumpkin" so that he did.

I was so surprised when we spotted his little pumpkin seeds were actually growing. I mean who knew what he put in those solo cups, but who am I to judge. I am the worst at keeping plants alive. Clearly all you need is a little southern dirt, a little southern cup, and a whole lot of southern boy.

His excitement and attentiveness to his garden has been so much fun to watch. Definitely one of the highlights to my week.

And that wraps up my favorites! I hope everyone has a fabulous Mother's Day weekend!

What have been some of your favorites this week?
