Great Wolf Lodge Atlanta

Over Memorial Day weekend the weather was predicted to be awful. It was such a bummer too because Memorial Day weekend typically marks our start to Summer. School's out and the hubbies travel is put on hold for an extra day. We typically celebrate on the lake and reflect on all those who gave us the great gift of doing so. And while we still had plans on doing the later, the former wasn't going to happen - at least according to the weather man. I was prepared for this, but Mr. Cute had other plans. He came home Saturday morning from his CrossFit work out and proclaimed, "I just booked us a weekend stay at the new Great Wolf Lodge!"

Now, I think I didn't speak for a whole minute and my jaw just hung open in sheer shock. Mr. Cute loves a good adventure, but themed water park hotels did not seem up his alley. Especially since we already tackled Disney this year, and he's had his fill of kid themed adventures.

Not ever being one to shun a good hotel stay and meals made by other people, I promptly went and packed our bags. The Great Wolf Lodge just opened this location in Atlanta, and it happened to be opening weekend. Check in wasn't until later in the afternoon so we hung around the house for a few hours before hitting the road. I was so glad too because Cute and I were able to catch Boo-Boo's tournament game that was being played like five minutes from my house.

After the game we grabbed some lunch and made our way south to LaGrange, GA (about an hour Southwest of Atlanta). We arrived at the tail end of check-in and the place was packed.  I was actually glad we didn't arrive until the end of it because there was a really long line the next day for check-in and you have to check-in before you do any of the activities. Waiting a long time with three super excited kids would have been tough, especially since there is so much to see/do right when you walk in.

My Kind of Camping

I know Carrie Beth and her family visited the Great Wolf Lodge in North Carolina a few years ago, but I guess I had put that in the back of my mind until we arrived. I didn't realize how over the top everything was. Every little detail was thought of!

Mr. Cute booked us in a Deluxe KidCabin Suite, and the room was adorable! It was the perfect size for our family of five and a great set up for traveling with kids.

The Great Wolf Lodge offers several size and styles of rooms, but I think this is one of the largest ones they have.

The room has a log cabin style mini room in it that contains a bunkbed, a single twin bed, a television and a night stand. It was decorated with the characters of the Great Wolf Lodge and the light fixture was decorated to look like the moon. It was a adorable and my kids thought it was the coolest thing ever.

The adult side of the room contained a queen sized bed, a table with chairs, and a large television. It had that lodge feel, and the wall decor made you feel as if you were sleeping in a tent.

I don't know about you, but that's my kind of camping.

Stay, Play & Eat

The one thing I can say about the Great Wolf Lodge is there is no shortage of activities. From mini golf and ropes courses to scavenger hunts and water slides. There's shows, story times, face painting, a large playroom...and I could go on and and on and on. There's a little something to keep everyone entertained literally all day long. I'll apologize now for the pic overload in this section, but we squeezed in a ton of activities in just a few short days.

And when we weren't playing we were eating. There's a candy store on site, a Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream (yes, please!), a Dunkin' Donuts, and multiple restaurants to dine from! We ate at their more upscale restaurant for dinner and a breakfast and it was delicious. For lunch we kind of all chose something different from one of the other restaurants and just sat in the courtyard area to eat.

(And yes, you will find an adult beverage or two whenever you might need one. Not to mention a pretty decent selection as well. You know, in case you need it.)

A Few Tips...

Okay if you have a trip planned and have never been to a GWL here are a few tips I wish I had known.

1: Pack tennis shoes and multiple hair ties. I didn't think about this when I was packed or getting us dressed for the day. But if your child wants to do any of the ropes courses or the climbing wall they require tennis shoes and your hair to be pulled back if it is longer. Totally for safety reasons and it was not something I thought about it. Luckily the Native shoes that the kids wear passed and I just used my hair tie when L.C. needed it on the fly.

2: Don't worry about packing flotation devices. If you want to worry about one less thing, you can leave your flotation devices home. There are tons of options available in a variety of sizes both by the big pool and the water park area. GWL was sold out while we were there and there were still tons of sizes available even at it's most crowded.

3: Off times at the water park. Obviously the indoor water park is the big draw. We noticed that from check out to check in time the waterpark was "empty". We were able to get off one ride and get right back on. We also noticed at dinner time until close it was pretty wide open too. So if you want a more "relaxing" water park experience maybe go during those time frames.

4: Bundled Passes. We did bundled passes that included pretty much everything including a few meals. Now we did this at the time because it seemed like a great deal. And trust me, if you do everything it is. But, because we were there for a shorter amount of time we didn't get to everything on the pass. And a few of the activities our kids didn't meet the height requirements (ropes course), so check and look at the activities and see what you really want to do and see what bundle would work best for you or if paying individually is more economical.

My kids are 7, 4, and 2 and to give you an idea of what they loved the most: MAGIQUEST (because kids are literally running everywhere lighting up things with wands), the water park, and the arcade.

5. Lockers. I'm not sure what I thought I was going to do when reaching the indoor water park, but sitting was not an option for our crew. I had all of our stuff, but didn't want to just leave it on a chair where I couldn't see it. The GWL has a whole section of lockers available to rent. Now this part I wasn't expecting and it was semi-expensive in my opinion. Locker rental ranged from $15-$40 I think depending on size. There are tons available and kiosks set up to pay, but you have to use your credit card to pay. Since our bands paid for everything we needed I didn't think to bring money down to the waterpark. An employee pointed me to the gift shop located off the water park area and there they can accept your band as payment if needed. I am so glad they offered a place to put our stuff, but factor in the cost across your stay each day or just come in swimsuits and flip flops only.

6. Waterproof cases. Now Carrie Beth's husband packed a Go-Pro for their GWL vacation, but we left so quickly we didn't think to pack ours. We did see a ton of people walking around with these water proof cell phone lanyards, and we thought that was so smart! Definitely something to think about if you want to capture the memories on the water slides.

So that's the end of my tips. If you have ever been and have any to share please do! We definitely look forward to going again!

Kudos to Mr. Cute for his last minute planning skills. It was such a fun trip and I was so impressed with the Great Wolf Lodge Atlanta. I love that it is so close to our home for a quick little getaway, and even all these weeks later our kids are still talking about what an awesome time they had.

Chores for Kids

Today I'm chatting all about kids and chores.  I am a firm believer that kids should help out around the house.  It's a big job to keep a household running and the responsibility of it all often falls on the mamas. During the school year when we have very little down time at home I do most of the work around here. However, summer is a different story!  The kids have more time at home and thus more time to help me out.

I have always had my kids pitching in to do their part.  When they were just toddlers they would help put toys away and put their dirty clothes in hampers. As pre-schoolers the cleaning of the playroom continued and I also started teaching them how to make their beds and they would bring their plates over from the table to the sink.  Now that they are older there is no holding back on my part. My kids can vacuum, clean windows, dust, put away laundry and just about any household chore.

Some people feel differently about whether or not kids should get paid for doing chores, but I believe that if they are going above and beyond what is expected of them then they should be rewarded.

There are certain jobs or chores that they are expected to just do. Things like making their bed each morning, feeding our dog, putting away their laundry and cleaning their rooms are chores that they do not get paid for.

If they want to help out in other ways that saves me from having to do it, then I'm happy to reward them for their efforts! Plus, I think it is really good for kids to be able to earn their own money, learn about saving and spending on items they want with the guidance of parents.

A few weeks ago I decided it was time to retire our reward jars.  They served us well for several years, but my kids were ready for the next phase of chores organization and they are all super motivated to earn cold hard cash instead of the promise of a toy or treat.  Concession stands at baseball tournaments, vending machines at camps, and special items they wish for are all now within their reach.

I had the Mr. help me with this chores board and it was really so simple. We took a wooden board and he attached picture hanging wire to the back of it.  Next he drilled small holes for these hooks to go in and I tied jute twine across the board so I could clip different jobs available.  Now, the newness of this has worn off just a bit, but the kids are still checking it out and helping with lots of different things around the house.

Basically nothing is required, but if they would like to earn a little money, they can check the board, perform the job and come to me to request their pay.  So far this new system is working out just how I had envisioned it would.  They are happy earning some extra money and I'm happy not having do do all the work around here.  It's a win-win in my book!

Tips for Handling Multiple Kids at the Pool

This post was sponsored by SwimWays as part of an Amabssador Program for Influence Central and all opinions expressed in my post are my own.

Summer time is here and we have parked ourselves at our home for the next three months - the pool! Sure we might take occasional breaks to do things like eat, go to the bathroom, or head to the beach. But otherwise, if you need us you can find us at the pool.

Every time we go to the pool I am outnumbered. Three kids, one mom. It seems like an overwhelming task - especially with younger kids. But for our sanity and the cleanliness of my home, I make sure we burn all of that kid energy off poolside. Plus during the heart of summer it's the best activity we can do to beat all that heat and humidity while still exercising and having fun.

And I do mean FUN! Yes, it takes a lot of work to get everyone to the pool, and it can be a nerve wracking experience to keep everyone alive, but I have just as much fun as the kids.

Maybe even more so because they aren't quite big enough to dunk me yet, and I have years of experience on them when it comes to the "Who can make the biggest splash?" contest.

Luckily, I have some serious water babies, and going to the pool everyday is an activity that more than satisfies them. We've been making our trek to the neighborhood pool since they were all infants and not once at the pool have I ever heard the words "I'm bored." uttered.

Once my children started multiplying it became a great way to entertain the older ones while I was keeping up with the babies needs. The moment those tiny tots were able to sit in their little SwimWays Baby Spring Float meant that we were all able to join in the fun. Then the day those tiny little ones started to swim on their own opened up a whole new world of pool time fun. The endless amounts of games to play, friends to swim with, and memories being made all makes up for the overwhelmingness of being one person trying to keep three tiny humans safe and happy at the pool.

With tons of advice from fellow moms, and a few years of experience under my belt here are my tips and tricks for easily handling multiple kids at the pool (while still having fun yourself!).

Tips & tricks for parents bringing multiple kids to the pool. How to survive and have fun while bringing more than one child to the pool. Keep safe and have fun with SwimWays Baby Spring Float Activity Center! #SwimWays #BabySpringFloat, #SpringFloat, #FloatWithSwimWays, #IC #ad

TIPS FOR HANDLING MULTIPLE KIDS AT THE POOL

Get Pre-Screened - Make sure you put your sunscreen on BEFORE you get to the pool. This tip is huge. Nothing is worse than trying to wrestle sunscreen on kids when they see the pool and their friends only two feet away. I don't care how fast you are with a spray can of SPF. The second those kids see that crystal blue water they are gone.

Pack Your Pantry - As in most situations where kids are involved, make sure you pack all the snacks. And I do mean all. All that splashing, swimming, running (even though they aren't supposed to), cannon balling, and 287 games of Marco Polo burns some serious calories. That makes kids even more ravenous than normal. Make sure you pack tons of snacks and drinks, and once you think you have enough - pack some more. (Note: When they come running for a snack is also when I like to reapply sunscreen. It happens often enough and their mouths tend to be full so they can't negotiate the various parts of their body they feel sunscreen doesn't need to be.)

Safety First - As mentioned, one of the biggest stresses about taking kids to the pool is water safety. Multiply that by two or three (or more!) and that stress amplifies. Your arms are full, and often don't have enough hands to keep everyone afloat at the same time. But the stress can be minimized by having great water safety devices, and well established boundaries all ready to go before you get there. We know the importance of teaching kids to swim, but in that stage before they learn to independently swim I like to bring good safe back-up with me to the pool.

My favorite piece of pool equipment of all time for babies and young toddlers is the SwimWays Baby Spring Float Activity Center. It's built for little ones aged 9 months to 24 months, and is the #1 selling baby float in the U.S. The moment I grabbed one myself all those years ago on a Target run at the suggestion of a friend, I could see why.

It quickly inflates, is easy to store when you don't need it (and comes with it's own carry bag!), and keeps baby safety entertained with it's variety of included toys. Not to mention it also comes with a detachable 50+ UPF sun canopy. This is a huge bonus! (See first bullet point.)

L.C. is my third child to use a SwimWays Baby Spring Float, and I will be so sad when she outgrows it. It has been a huge helper to allow babies to float and enjoy feeling as if they are swimming independently, but keeping them safe. I've been able to have an arm free to help the others work on their backstroke, catch a ball or be involved in one of those games of Marco Polo.

Don't Forget the Toys - No matter how you go about it, pool toys are just a must when it comes to kids and the pool. Every kid wants them, and every parent has a pool bag full of them. We are all in this together!

After years of experience, and finally crafting how to get three kids and all of our pool stuff from my car to the pool in only one trip (trust me, that was the best day ever!), I've realized what pool toys are most popular.

Never underestimate the power of a good old fashioned football and dollar store water guns. Diving rings will forever reign strong. Simple plastic cups are gold. Anything with a net is a winner. And sharks - sharks toys are beloved by any and every child. Anything that floats, squirts, or can be chewed will always win baby's heart.

Toys that serve dual purpose win mom's heart. Remember that whole one trip from the car I was excited about? Less is more. The SwimWays Baby Spring Float Activity Center comes with several detachable toys (a squeaker, stacking rings, a rattle and a soft touch star). The younger crew loves playing with these both on and off the float, so no need to bring extra toys!

Get in the Water - Lounging leisurely on the side of the pool just won't happen. Go ahead, make the first cannon ball and get it all over with. You'll be in the water already in case anything happens, and to be honest it's just plain fun.

So be the fun mom, get your hair wet, and enjoy these moments. Because before you know it they won't want to have you catch them off the side of the pool, play Categories with them or show you how they learned to float. Somewhere in the grand scheme of life we will all transition over into that embarrassing human being at the pool who is trying to place anything above SPF 5 on their skin, and OMG wearing that bathing suit out in public.

Embrace it and enjoy it. Your kids will love remembering you splashing and playing right along with them. The memory of that holds a lot of weight - for both of you.

What are some of your favorite tips and tricks for bringing multiple kids to the pool?

Baseball Moms {10 Essentials for Surviving Allstar Summer Ball}

It's no secret I'm a baseball mama. I've talked about it several times here before and my little guy is just so in love with the game.  He and I have spent many hours practicing together...from playing catch to some driveway hitting sessions, he always wants the Mr. or I to be outside playing ball with him.   All long his goal was to tryout and make the summer allstar team. He told me if he found out he made the team it would be the best day of his life.  He says that a a lot about a lot of different things so this kid has a pretty good life, but he was so excited when he found out he had made the team.

We are two tournaments in and I am having just as much fun as he is!  There is nothing I love more than cheering on my sweet boy doing what he loves. We even had Jen and Cute there for one of his games!

We're with a great group of kids and families and that makes it so much more fun. We are rookies when it comes to the summer ball thing, but a lot of these families are seasoned pros so we have learned from the best so I'm sharing 10 must-have essentials for surviving allstar summer baseball.  And a lot of these things can be used for more than just baseball!

1. Tents
This team's tent game is on point.  It is a well orchestrated event to get tents up and in place.  With the hot sun beating down, it is the only way we can manage to stand sitting in the stands to cheer for our boys.  It's amazing to watch one team break down, move tents and then the next team seamlessly move in with their tents.

2. Misting fans
This is probably one of the best inventions ever!  It reminds me of the misting areas at Disney World.  You fill a bucket with water, put this fan with a hose connected to it on top and when you turn it on the mist blows out and starts cooling us off. I always strategically place myself near the mister!

3. Bleacher seat cushions
This is being purchased as a Father's Day gift for two people I know this year.  It is brutal to sit for double headers on the hard bleacher seats with no back support.  These seats make it much more comfortable and will probably help my slouching, too!

4. Collapsible Wagons
You have to have a way to get all this stuff with you to the fields...especially if you have to park kind of far away!  These soft sided wagons collapse so they don't take up much room in the back of your car, but they can haul a ton of stuff!

5. Cooling neck towels
I worry about the poor boys playing ball all day in the hot sun, but we do our best to keep them cool with fans in the dugout and they all have these cooling neck towels that they wear between innings or when they aren't batting.  It really seems to help!

6. Good insulated water bottles/cups
A good insulated and leak-proof water bottle is a must.  We go through so much water on these hot days.  Our favorites are the Under Armor jug and a Swell or Corkcicle for us spectators.  You can read all about which keeps water coldest the longest from my daughter's Science Fair experiment!

7. Cooler
A cooler with extra waters to refill cups, snacks, Gatorades and even extra ice is nice on those super hot days.  We've been using this Yeti Hopper Flip 8 on tournament days and it is the perfect size!  It holds several drinks, a big ziplock of extra ice and there is always extra room for some snacks like fresh fruit, etc.

8. Baseball Apparel
Love supporting our team with some of my favorite baseball apparel.  I have a team shirt, but just ordered a few others like this and I'm eyeing these earrings, leather wrap bracelet and adorable baseball sandals.

9. A Big Tote Bag
While I'm at it, this super cute baseball tote bag is calling my name!  I have a big bag I've been using, but the handle is about to bite the dust so this one might be my next purchase.

10. White Brite & Fels-Naptha
There is nothing better than some crisp white baseball pants. That is until your kids takes a dive into second base and gets them COVERED in red clay.  I used to cringe, but now that I have a few secret ingredients to make white pants white again I don't even bat an eyelash. This cocktail of cleaners is seriously a miracle worker!  First I soak the pants using White Brite and then rub a bit of Fels-Naptha on the really dingy parts like knees.  Lastly I wash with some other white towels and the pants come out good as new every.single.time.  You would think I would get used to the results, but I'm literally amazed every time!

Book Club: June

It's June and that means SUMMER!!! We've been on summer break for a whole week now, and while we still had to run around for dance recital rehearsals, tournament baseball games, and soccer team tryouts, we are SO EXCITED!!

Summer is our season. It just makes us happy. And now that it's summer and we've taken that whole school/homework/five million activities out of our lives we have a little more free time. Dealing with on two million activities is way easier. ;)

And more free time means more time for reading! This month's book club we are going to change things up a bit. We're going to quickly share what we read last month (and it's some good ones), and then we'll share some of our favorite reads for the summer! We've already got our Kindles loaded up and our umbrella laced fruity cocktails ready to go!

WHAT WE READ...

May was a light month for book club reads. May was just chaotic and the end of the school year leaves little room to do much of anything other than eat, sleep and survive. We did squeak out a few books and a few of them we highly recommend!

The Secret to Southern Charm
We kick started the month with The Secret to Southern Charm. This is a fun southern style sequel to Slightly South of Simple that we read last year. Kristy Woodson Harvey's books are just plain fun. They are novels you just kind of sink into, have some cheeky southern humor, and make you want to hug your family and move to a small beach town.

The Secret to Southern Charm follows Sloane who just learned her military husband is missing in action. Luckily her mother Ansley, and her two sisters are there two help pick up the pieces and they are surrounded by a community of supportive characters. We just loved the story and can't wait for the third book in the series to come out.

Sweetbitter
Sweetbitter was the second book we read for the month. Okay, so this received rave reviews, and has a new show based on the book, so we had high expectations. The story follows Tess as she moves to New York and lands a job in a highly sought after restaurant. About halfway through this book we were ready to give up. We pushed through until the end, but it was tough. It was totally not what we were expecting. Have you read it? Are we totally off that we didn't like it?

Girl, Wash Your Face
We switched it up for our third book of the month. We kept seeing Girl, Wash Your Face pop up in our social media scrolling and we decided to see what all the hype was about. We had no clue when we purchased this book that it was written by a fellow (much larger) blogger, Rachel Hollis. After reading it we've decided Rachel might be our new BFF. Fun, fashionable, honest, and completely transparent - she's worth checking out. The book is geared towards women kind of in our age bracket, and chats about the lies we are told (or tell ourselves) and why we should kick those to the curb. We loved the message behind Girl, Wash Your Face and enjoyed immensely Rachel's personality and humor throughout the book.

Everyday Holy by Melanie Shankle. A great daily devotional.

Everyday Holy
Obviously we didn't read this in it's entirety this month, but we just love Melanie Shankle's novels, so when we heard she came out with a devotional we just had to scoop that up too. If you are looking for a new one or just a little positive quick read to mix into your grab Everyday Holy.

Now to switch it up a bit as we head into June and summer!
