Book Club: Best Books of 2020

Happy first Book Club post of 2021 friends! For our book loving readers - get ready because this is a jam packed post. We're wrapping up all things 2020 and sharing our favorites of the year!

For those of you who aren't into reading, grab a glass of wine, click Bridgerton on your Netflix and enjoy! It's book to screen, so it totally counts. And you'll thank us later. We promise! ;)

WHAT WE READ...

CARRIE BETH

I wasn't able to get through quite as many books as I had hoped this past month because I felt like I was running a marathon just trying to get ready for Christmas, but I was able to finish three!

First up for me was The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes.  I really wasn't sure what to expect from this story, but I almost always love the Reese Witherspoon picks, so figured I would give it a try.  It was a little slow for me to get into and took a while to develop the characters, but I did enjoy it.  It's about an English woman, Alice, that finds herself married to a handsome man in small-town Kentucky during the depression era.  The story follows her as she begins to make friends in the town, grow more unhappy with her marriage, and finally build up the courage to leave the overpowering rule of her father-in-law's home. The friendship between the small group of women who run a mobile library service give them all the strength and courage to stand up for themselves against the conventional rule of men who think it is their place to tell the women what they can and can't do.  I loved the way it ended and was happy to learn Alice was happy in the end.

To put me in the Christmas spirit I read In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren.  It was a very cute story that had a sort of Groundhog Day feel to it.  The main character, Maelyn, finds herself living the same holiday vacation over and over. During this she starts making decisions and takes actions to help herself get what she wants and ultimately is able to break the repeated pattern and end up with all she ever hoped for.  It was a quick, easy, and cute holiday read!

My book loving friend, J, texted me about this book and told me I should listen to it. Her suggestions never fail me! The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid had actually been on my Audible Wish-List for a while so I finally decided to give it a go.  It's a story about the rise of fame in Hollywood, and the heartbreaking things that some will do to get (and stay) there. It's told through several different points of view as Evelyn, an iconic movie star, hand picks her interviewer to write a book about her life story.  Without giving too much away, I wasn't expecting the forbidden love plot that became the main focus of the story.  I really enjoyed this novel, but felt that towards the end I was ready for it to wrap up. Then WHAM, I was hit with the unexpected twist and learned the reason that Evelyn chose her interviewer.  I didn't see it coming AT ALL and it really makes you think about what you would do in that position.

Saddle up because I finished the 2020 with a reading frenzy! As I sat down to type this post I realized I read/listened to seven books over the course of the busiest month of the year. After a lackluster November on my part for Book Club, December proved to be much more exciting.

Covid rearing it's nasty germy self again cancelled most of our plans and activities for the month. So even though we were still busy, it wasn't the normal level of busy we are used to experiencing during the holidays.

And I can't say I'm mad about it.

Especially when it allotted for more free time to read...with an extra glass of wine or two.

Feeling the holiday the spirit, first up for the month was In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren. I've come to really enjoy books by this best friend author duo, and In a Holidaze was a fun surprise to kick off a month of reading. The concept of the story was farfetched, but super fun. As Carrie Beth mentioned, it was a quick, enjoyable read that had me sucked in from the first chapter. Lots of romance (PG for those wondering), lots of humor, and lots of little life lessons.  Even though the book has a holiday feel to it, I think it is a background part of the story. You most definitely could pick this up and read it anytime of the year.

Second on the list for the month was The Bookish Life of Nina Hill. I had this on Audible and had been trying to finish it for months now. I'm so glad I did because it was such a fun one! The story follows Nina who works in a bookstore and is more than content with her well routined life - especially her solitude. Until one day a lawyer walks into work and informs her she has received an inheritance from her long lost mystery father. The kicker? The family she never knew existed lives in the same town she does. There's family drama, there's a love interest, and there is a TON of humor. I loved this book and it has me earmarking more by Abbi Waxman for future reads.

This next book might be one of my favorites for the entire year. This Time Next Year was another Audible listen for me, but speaking to a few friends who read it, they enjoyed it just as much. Okay there is a lot packed into this book, but the gist of it is two people (Minnie & Quinn) meet at a New Year's Eve party. Turns out they had actually met before - on the day of their birth thirty years before. They were the first babies born of the new year and there was a big deal about their births. But their lives took two completely different directions. Minnie comes from a financially challenging background and believes she has the worst luck in the world. Quinn on the other hand has lead a seemingly charmed wealthy life. But things aren't always as they seem - for either of them. The story flips back and forth between past birthdays and instances where both Quinn and Minnie's paths crossed, but they had no idea. This was a slow burning love story that came together perfectly for me at the end. I enjoyed it and if you like "chic lit" with a little more depth - put this one on your radar.

Audible number three for the month was The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. I saw this won the Goodreads vote for Book of the Year, and was intrigued. It follows the story of Nora Seed and her visit to The Midnight Library - the space between life and death. Nora gets a kind of "butterfly effect" look at her life's regrets and what would have happened if she made different decisions.

I have two major thoughts about this book...
1: I should have saved this book for a later date.
2: Trigger warning: It deals with suicide.

The Midnight Library is a really good book. But at times it deals with pretty depressing content, and nothing screams holiday joy like reading a book about life's regrets and searching for a better life, am I right?

I wish I had read it at a different time, but the concept and the way Haig wraps up the story is refreshing. It's very well written, and at times I felt like it was a little too philosophical. But again - that's on me and my mindset at the time. Now that we are beyond the holidays, I give it my full endorsement.

After reading such a deep novel, I decided to really lighten things up for the back half of my reading pile. I loved the Simple Wild series I read earlier in the year. So, when I saw there was a new book released in December, I couldn't wait to dig in. Forever Wild is the third book in the series and wraps up the love story of Calla and Jonah and all of their Alaskan adventures. It picks up where the last books leaves off. Calla and Jonah are working on their charter business, building their home together, and planning a wedding. This book was a little lighter to me than the previous two, but still packs a lot in with wedding antics, a missing person, and the same lovable characters. Their story gives some great closure on their story, but I see where doors are open for the author to do a few more sequels or spin offs with other characters. (Fingers crossed!)

Reese Witherspoon never does me wrong. Not when it comes to her movies (Can I get a bend and snap?), and definitely not when it comes to her book recommendations. So when I spotted The Chicken Sisters in the grocery store - and saw her seal of approval - I threw it in the cart with out a second thought. This story was so fun! It's Marie Kondo meets Food Network meets The Real Housewives of Kansas all rolled into one. Two sisters end up competing on a reality television show for $100,000. Winner gets the cash and the claim of best chicken restaurant in their small town. The family rivalry dates back generations and for each sister this would be the ultimate win. It was a super cute story, with some fun characters, and light hearted family drama. I smiled throughout the story and it was a great read to sit down with during the holidays. Good choice Reese!

To finish off the month I dug into one of my favorite series I stumbled upon earlier in the year. I love the parts of the Virgin River Series that I've read so far. Not to mention the show on Netflix was one of my favorites last year too. A friend asked if I had seen the latest season and I got so excited. I didn't have time to watch it, but still wanted my Virgin River fix. I downloaded the fourth book in the series on my Kindle and it just happened to be a Christmas story.

In a A Virgin River Christmas, we meet Marcie who is a marine widow. It's been a year and she's determined to find her deceased husband's best friend to give him something special. She finds herself in a remote part of the outskirts of Virgin River and of course the town's favorite characters are welcoming. In true Virgin River fashion there is a town emergency (or three), and a romantic relationship that blossoms in the remote tundra of winter wilderness. They are frivolous fun romances novels that are easy to get into. The Christmas story wasn't my favorite one I've read so far, but it's fun to get a peek at some of the other characters in the town.

WHAT'S UP NEXT...

CARRIE BETH

It's no secret that I love young adult fiction and back in the day the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer is where it all started.  A story about vampires and love?  I know...not my normal cup of tea, but oh how I remember being literally OBSESSED with the books.  I had babies at the time I read them, was still up nursing during the night and should have been trying to get every second of sleep I could, but I would stay up into the wee hours of the night reading.  I remember it was one of the first book series that left me thinking about the characters LONG after I was finished reading them.

I am so excited to finally read Midnight Sun, the story of Twilight told from Edward's point of view!

JEN

My first book for 2021 is When You Were Mine by Rebecca Serle. I loved In Five Years (so much so it's a contender for my Best of 2020 - spoiler alert for below!). When You Were Mine popped up as a suggestion on my Kindle. Once I read what the plot was based on a modern day Romeo and Juliet, I became intrigued and hit download.

Now to announce our favorite reads of 2020!!! There were a lot of great contenders for our favorite books this year and it was hard to narrow it down, but here are both of our thoughts for the books that ranked at the top of the list for us...

BEST OF 2020

CARRIE BETH

I read/listened to a lot of books this year and when I think back over some of my very favorites a few stuck out in my mind.  I'm going to name my top three and an honorable mention because I couldn't pick just 3.  They are all VERY different, but ones that I hope you all will enjoy, too!

Honorable Mention:

Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate probably would have made it into the top three except that it was very disturbing to me at times and honestly when I am consumed by a book I want to feel happy.  You can see my full review HERE, but it's based on a true story about an adoption agency that is just heartbreaking.  The woman running the agency would steal or trick poor families into signing over their rights to their own children and sell the children to well-off families.  It told stories of the orphanages, pulled at your heartstrings, and made my heart ache for the children and families that actually went through this.  If you like deep and thought provoking novels, this one is for you.

THIRD FAVORITE:

My third favorite book of the year was Paper Princess (and actually all of the books in the Royals series) by Erin Watt.  Going back to me liking mindless, young adult, trashy romance novels, this one fits the bill.  It was the first book series that I have not been able to get enough of and listening to it every second possible in a very long time so I'm not saying that it is anything over the top that is going to knock your sox off, but it's what I love so it was my #3!  You can see my full review HERE

SECOND FAVORITE:

My second favorite book of the year was On The Bright Side by Melanie Shankle.  If you need a pick-me-up, especially in light of all that is happening in our world today, this is the book for you.  I have read all of Shankle's books and have LOVED them all.  Sparkly Green Earrings (about motherhood), The Antelope in the Living Room (about marriage) and Nobody's Cuter Than You (about friendship) are some of her other books I would highly recommend. They are each made up of short stories about her life, lessons she has learned along the way, and each one of them makes you smile, laugh, and cry.  On the Bright Side was a combination of all topics and the way Shankle tells the stories it makes you think she could be one of your best friends. It was such a great reminder to always look in the bright side of things and I loved the lessons she wove into each story.

FAVORITE BOOK OF 2020:

I wasn't shocked to look back and pick Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid as my VERY favorite book of 2020.  I listened to it last January and right after I finished it I remember thinking it was going to be hard to top as my #1 of the year.  It was about about the rise and fame of a 70's rock band on their way to worldwide fame.  It had everything you would imagine in a sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll lifestyle until the band mysteriously broke up. This story just felt SO real to me and at the way it was written, interview style and very conversational, attributed to that. If you are an audible fan I HIGHLY suggest listening to this one. There are a lot of characters and it is narrated by a lot of different people so that just made it for me!

JEN

I looked back and realized I read 54 books last year! As I was reflecting on everything a few stand out across the year and my top one still makes me think about it long after I read it. There were some that I thought would make the cut, and even though they didn't they still deserve some mention.

The Lost Girls of Paris
This historical fiction novel is based on a true story and I was riveted. It was interesting and captivating from start to finish. It was also fun to Google and learn the facts behind what the story is based on. Great read! (read my full review)

The Inheritance Games
This is YA novel, but it sucked me in right from the start. It's a rags to riches story with a huge twist. I love the challenge of it, the hints of a love triangle, and the unique angle of the story. It has a sequel planned and I already can't wait to read it. (read my full review)

THIRD FAVORITE:

In Five Years  by Rebecca Serle
I could not put this one down. In Five Years is similar to my top pick, but the concept of it is so fun. There's a huge twist in the story that makes it unique. It's a story of friendship more than romance and I can't recommend it enough. (see my full review here)

SECOND FAVORITE:

Life and Other Near Death Experiences by Camille Págan

I found Camille Págan books on me Kindle as a suggestion and never looked back. Each and every one that I read was really really good. The stand out for me though was Life and Other Near Death Experiences. I highly recommend grabbing a blanket, a good glass of wine, and digging into this one. (see my full review here)

FAVORITE BOOK OF 2020:

You Were There Too by Colleen Oakley
You Were There Too was the book I couldn't stop thinking about all year. I benchmarked everything else against it. It sucked me in from the start, and at first I thought it was just a love story (and there is that), but there is a HUGE twist in the last few chapters that make you just say "wow!". The way the characters are all tied together and how the story moves along was different than anything else I had read the last few years. That might be why it stuck out more than others, but its a really well written plot, and I already am looking forward to reading more by Oakley. (read my full review)

Book Club: November

Hello December! Oh my - how did we all finally make it?!

Honestly, December seemed so far away, until we looked up and poof - here it is. We are collectively taking this month to just soak in all the holiday fun. All while we have December 31st quadruple circled BIG on our planners. Bring on 2021!

Today is Book Club Day (whoop whoop!) and we are chatting about what we read in November. Have anything we need to read these next few weeks to close out 2020 - share with us! We think we each have our top three for the year picked out, but sometimes there is always a last minute book that just "wows" us.

Here's how November went...

WHAT WE READ...

CARRIE BETH

Last month I shared how I was totally obsessed with The Royals series by Erin Watt so I started my month finishing the last two in that series.

Fallen Heir follows one of the supporting characters from the first three books, Easton Royal, who is one of the brothers. He's in a downward spiral because of addiction and the fact that he is still mourning the loss of his mother. His life is just a little out of control until he meets an unexpected girl, Hartley. She isn't like the other girls he dates and really doesn't give him the time of day. That is enough to make Easton want to try and change his ways. They start to develop real feelings for each other and emotions run high as this books ends with a major event and leaves you hanging.

Cracked Kingdom follows Hartley's story and after the terrible accident that ended book 4. I found myself just wanting to fast forward and figure out if everything worked out.

A lot of the characters annoyed me in this one and definitely didn't enjoy it as much as at the other four, but even though I say that, I still listened to it in about 2 days because I just couldn't stop! These types of books are my total guilty pleasure.  They are sort of far fetched with crazy rich teenagers living like adults and its very rated R, but I'm a sucker for them.  If anyone has any recommendations for a similar series please send them my way!

My next listen was Heart Bones by Colleen Hoover.  She never disappoints me and although I haven't read the one controversial title that a lot of her regular readers do not like (Verity), all of her other novels are generally ones that draw me in right away.  It's always love story, always a tear jerker and always has me feeling all the feels.

Heart Bones about a young girl who has lived an incredibly hard life with her addict mother and after an overdose that kills her mom, she goes to live with her dad she barely knows.  She's thrust into a very different lifestyle and while she is grateful, she is still feeling lost. She meets an equally lost guy and they just seem to "get" each other. That is until his past and secrets are revealed.  Everyone tries to convince her to forget about him, but she never waivers and vows to stand by his side. They ultimately help each other both find their ways and has a happy ending!

My last book of the month was Castle of Water by Dane Huckelbridge.

I decided after all my semi-shallow books I would try something a little deeper.  This one follows two strangers who, after being in a terrible plane crash, finds themselves on a small uninhabited island trying to test their survival skills until they can be rescued.  Only they come to the hard realization that they are most likely not going to be rescued.  It follows their life on the island and I questioned myself so much during this story. Wondering what I would have done if put in the same situation and it really makes you stop and think about not only the choices you would make, but also all of the things we take for granted on a daily basis! I was a little unhappy with the ending of this one and wished it gave a little more closure, but it was a great book!

JEN

This is the second month in a row I didn't read the book that I originally picked out. I am listening to The Bookish Life of Nina Hill (and am really enjoying it), but haven't quite finished it yet. So stay tuned on that review next month.

I did manage to read a few books from my pile this month. We snuck away to our cabin for the week of Thanksgiving, and it's amazing what a little downtime in the middle of nowhere can do for your reading habits. I read two books in that one week.

First up was Love Your Life by Sophie Kinsella. I love Kinsella books. They are always filled with humor and quirky characters. The premise behind this one is two people meet on a writing retreat and fall in love. They aren't allowed to tell each other their real names or any details about their real life. After one blissful week together, they go home determined to continue the relationship. But when real life sets in, blissful might be a strong word. This book was really sweet, had some funny moments, and some of the secondary characters I actually enjoyed more than the main characters. It's a quick, light read that I would rate PG on the romance/language scale.

Moving on to my second book for the month - The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley. Why I thought it would be a good idea to read a murder mystery based in the woods in the middle of nowhere, while I was in the woods in the middle of nowhere is beyond me. But it's okay - no sleep was majorly lost (unless you count the staying up too late to figure out the ending kind of lost). The nice thing about this murder mystery is that it is more of a whodunit style of mystery and less of a gruesome descriptive one. The story follows a group of college friends reuniting for a New Year's trip. They decide to spend their holiday at an uber exclusive hunting resort. Insert a crazy windstorm and a missing guest in a remote police can't get to you until a few days later location and you have The Hunting Party

The story is told from several characters points of view, and time pops back and forth from present day to three days prior. Shockingly was easy to keep up with, and not get mixed up. The plot also has two mysteries built into it: Which character dies? & Who did it? Honestly, this was not a likable cast of characters, so there were several times I found myself one or two of them would be "it". I think the author does this on purpose though. I enjoyed the story and it kept my interest from start to finish. There are a few surprises and twists throughout, it that kept me guessing.

WHAT'S UP NEXT...

CARRIE BETH

Sticking with the deep books and more meaningful literature roll, I decided to go with one that has been on my Audible wish-list for a while. The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes has a gazillion great reviews so I'm excited to check it out!

JEN

Okay, going to finish up The Bookish Life of Nina Hill and give that review. Then, I think I'm going to switch gears to a holiday read. This one is on my list.

In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren.

Any good books we should add to our "must read" lists for 2020?

We can't wait to share our favorites of the year with you soon!

Book Club: October

It's Book Club Day!!!  How are we already almost half way through November?  The first two weeks flew by and now we are looking at Christmas right around the corner.  We definitely need to get on it when it comes to Christmas shopping, Christmas decorating, and just prepping for the holidays in general, but we'll worry about that later because day the talk is about books!

We've got a wide range of books to share with you today!

WHAT WE READ...

CARRIE BETH

As soon as Jen finished reading One to Watch by Kate Stayman-London she texted me to put it on my list and it was the very next book I listened to.

I loved it!  This book was so cute about a plus-size young woman who ended up on a reality date show similar to the Bachelorette.  It focused a lot on on body image, showed a bit of what behind the scenes would be like on one of these shows, and had me rooting for the main character the entire time. She was very relatable, funny, and it was great to see her journey through this experience. I would definitely recommend this one!

Next up for me was another book Jen read. I'm quite the follower this month if you can't tell. I'm not sure what I was expecting with The Inheritance Games by Jenniver Lynn Barnes, but I was pleasantly surprised.

This book follows a girl named Avery who is homeless, living in her car, and going to school just to try to get ahead and all of the sudden she finds herself inheriting the fortune of a BILLIONAIRE she didn't even know.  However, in order to get the money she must move into the estate with the grandsons of the late billionaire. The story follows her interactions with them as they find and solve riddles, games, puzzles and codes throughout the house that their grandfather was known for. They believe these clues will help them find out why the money was left to Avery. It turns into a real life game of trying to solve the mystery and it kept me listening just to find out the back story.  I was SO surprised by the ending and the reasoning for her being the chosen one to inherit the fortune!

The end of this month I binged The Royals book series by Erin Watt and this is my total guilty pleasure.  This series is classified as Young Adult Romance, but as I told Jen, there is nothing very young adult about this except the fact that the main characters are in high school.

It's very rated R, very cheesy in parts, and has nothing to do with actual royalty like I assumed from the titles.  But, oh my, I could NOT stop listening and finished each book in about two days.  It was one of those that I listened to every second I possibly could just to find out what happened.

Paper Princess is about a 17 year old girl, Ella, who grows up without a father and who's mother died of cancer a few years ago. She is living on her own, supporting herself by stripping, and all of the sudden gets swept away from her hard life by her new guardian, a friend of her father's that she never met. She finds herself living in a mansion with her guardian and his 5 teenage sons. They all have more money than they know what to do with and enough issues to match due to the recent overdose of their mother. Ella has a hard time navigating the super posh prep school she has to start attending and her new role as "sister" to these 5 boys. One of the brothers, Reed, she is drawn to and ultimately becomes romantically involved with. There is SO much going on in one book, but it is SO good!

Broken Prince follows the the same characters, Reed and Ella, and switches back and forth between their points of view as their relationship develops.  More of the same as book one, and more for me to love.  Again, this book is for sure rated R for language and romantic content, but I couldn't put it down.

Twisted Palace keeps the story going as Ella's gets introduced to her biological father (who everyone thought was dead) and the two of them try to figure out their father/daughter relationship.  Without giving too much away, one of the characters is killed and the prime suspect the police are targeting is Ella's boyfriend, Reed.  I couldn't wait to see how it ended up and the person who ultimately admitted to committing the crime shocked me. I got so sucked into these characters and just wanted to know more about their relationships and how things ended up for them so I finished them all very quickly.

JEN

Last month I was on a reading roll. This month...not so much. I read two books and neither one of them I was really "wowed" about. They were good, but not "can't put them down" great. After last month's selection, I think my expectations were a little high.

First on the reading list for the month was Troubles in Paradise. This is the third book in the series and I was excited to see how the story wrapped up for the characters. The plot follows Irene and her sons on St. John after they learn her husband/their dad died in a mysterious helicopter crash. The crash holds a lot of questions for them, including a secret family and millions of dollars. Intriguing right? The first two books I loved, but Troubles in Paradise kind of fell a little flat to me. I can't put my finger on why. I like how it ended, but getting there was kind of tough. I remember thinking throughout the series that the husband and his island girlfriend would just pop up at some point. But, everything wraps up in a nice little bow, and while not every question is answered about the mysterious crash, you do get a lot of closure on the story.

Second for the month was One By One by Ruth Ware. This story follows the board members of a music app on their annual company retreat. This year they decide to go to a French mountain chalet to enjoy skiing the Alps in between board meetings. An avalanche occurs and one by one the board members seem to be disappearing or dying. I enjoy Ware's books because the story usually keeps the murder parts pretty light (gruesome is not my thing), and keep you guessing until the very end about the whodunit part. One By One held to the same recipe, but I figured out the whodunit part about half way through the book. The cast of characters is huge and there are a ton of secrets and new information given as the story unfolds, but the murderer becomes obvious early on. I enjoyed it, but it didn't keep me on the edge of my seat like the last few of her books did.

WHAT'S UP NEXT...

CARRIE BETH

I might sound like a broken record, but I'm 3 books in so I figure why not go ahead and finish series by Erin Watt.  Fallen Heir focuses on one of the other brothers, Easton. He deals with addiction issues, can kind of be a jerk, but is also lovable and wants to win the attention of a new girl in school. The new girl, Hartley, has no interests in him at all because she says he needs to grow up.

Cracked Kingdom, the final book in the Royals series, follows Hartley's story.  After this one I might finally be able to get something else done in my life, but I have to finish it and see how things end!

JEN

I had Nicholas Sparks' newest book - The Return - ready to go for last month, but I just never picked it up. I'm going to try to dig into that one over Thanksgiving Break. Until then I'm going to try to keep it light I think. I have this Audible ready to go...

The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman. It was recommended to me and after reading the synopsis, and seeing the reviews, I went ahead and hit "download".

Book Club: September

Today is Book Club Day! Some of you are super excited, and some are all "Meh. Just give me the home decor or the yoga pants I never knew I needed in my life."

To those of you we wish we had a few new Netflix shows to offer up to you. But sadly, watching Selling Sunset or Schitt's Creek in car pool line is generally frowned upon - so book reviews it is.

And we aren't mad about that one bit.

Especially because in September we read some good ones. Like go ahead and get your Kindle fully charged good.

WHAT WE READ...

CARRIE BETH

I'm the reason this blog post is happening in the middle of October instead of at the beginning like it normally would. I was really trying to finish my second book so I would have something that I loved to share because my first book this month was just so-so.

The first book I listen to this month was Kevin Kwan's Sex and Vanity

I had really high hopes for this book because I loved the Crazy Rich Asians series, but for some reason I just couldn't get into this one.  I don't know if it was because I was listening instead of reading it, but the  first half felt very long, drawn out, and never ending.  I did enjoy the crazy lavish settings and the outlandish characters made me laugh. The second part of the story had me rooting for certain characters and kept me very interested to see how things would turn out, but unfortunately I could have passed on this book all together.

My next book this past month was a recommendation from my mother-in-law and it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

The Last Flight by Julie Clark is a suspense thriller about two different women who want to escape their present lives and for very different reasons. They end up switching boarding passes at an airport and what happens next changes everything.

This book had a lot of unexpected twists and chance meetings that kept me guessing how things would turn out.  I really enjoyed it!

This month's book club is brought to you by Fall Break at the beach and 9,938 hours playing mom taxi. Seriously though. I calculated it and I spend at least 2 hours and 45 minutes of each day in the car between car pool, school drops offs, and sports drop offs. That logs me a lot of Audible hours each day if I don't listen to music. I still thank Carrie Beth every day for introducing me to the app, otherwise I'd be listening to the Frozen 2 soundtrack and Taylor Swift on one continuous loop the entire school year.

My grand total for the month - six books! Five of them I loved. One I am on the fence about.

First up for the month was 28 Summers by the queen of beach reads - Elin Hilderbrand. I finished this book and immediately sent it to a few girlfriends telling them to read it on their Fall Break trips. It was a bit controversial in material, but I think it is now one of my favorite Elin Hilderbrand books to date. It follows the two main characters over the course of 28 Labor Day weekends. The two make a pact that no matter what happens in life or whom they are with, they must spend Labor Day weekend together. No questions asked. For the rest of the year? No communication. No social media. No text. Nothing. It is interesting how this plays out over the years. The end was perfection and if it doesn't make you at least a little teary eyed, you aren't human.

Next up is a book I had been waiting for for awhile. I loved reading The Royal We a few years ago, so when Carrie Beth told me there was going to be a sequel I was so excited. The Heir Affair is the only book out of the month I'm kind of wishy washy on. Part of that is on me. I hadn't read The Royal We in years, so some of the details were a little hard to follow at first because I couldn't remember how the last book ended. Also, for me, the first part of this book was slooooow. Like I couldn't figure out why I loved The Royal We so much and this one was falling flat. But I hung in there and the second half and the end more than made up for it. If you read the first one in the series, give it a whirl. If anything just to get some closure on the characters and a "where they are now". Otherwise, just fall in love with The Royal We

In keeping with the royal YA trend that I was on, I also read the sequel to one of my other favorite royal series in recent years. Last year I read American Royals and loved it. Now Majesty was a sequel to me that lived up to the hype. The is set in modern America, but America as a monarchy and the Washington Family became the first royal family of America after the war. What I loved most about this sequel is it started right where it left off, and then took whatever you remembered from the first story and completely obliterated every relationship and what you loved most about it. But in the best way possible. It ends up making you like it even more. All the love interests swap. All the gossip changes around. All the characters grow, change and surprise you more. It was a great sequel, and one that wrapped up everything nicely, but also left somethings up in the air that I could almost see a third book being added to it. At the end of the day the story is just plain fun, and even though it is considered YA, I really enjoyed it.

The One to Watch was an Audible suggestion that popped up for me, and I'm so glad I went ahead and clicked "listen". I think this is one of my favorite listens/reads for the year. The story follows a plus size fashion blogger who gets asked to participate on a Bachelor style show after she rants about it online for not being diverse in its casting. It's a super fun read that covers a lot of topics (i.e. body diversity, eating disorders,  sexual preference, race, social media influence...), so I would deem it along the lines of a beach read with a little more meat. You fall in love with the main character in so many ways, and the humor throughout the book balances some of the tougher messages the author tries to convey. I'm also going to give this one the PG-13 disclaimer in case you're planning to listen to it while mom-taxiing too.
(read: bring headphones)

Same with Heart Bones by Colleen Hoover. It gets the double headphones warning. All of her books are that way, but don't let that be a deterrent because she usually makes you feel all the feels by the end of the story. Okay I texted Carrie Beth after I read this one to put it on her radar since I know she is a huge Hoover fan. I loved it at the time, but as I'm reading my notes, I'm torn as to what drew me in. The story follows Beyah after she becomes homeless when her mom overdoses. Beyah has lived a rough life in every way possible, and is so close to rising above her circumstances until her mom's death. She has no choice but to track down her estranged father and ask to live with him for two months before going to college in the Fall.

Are you still with me?

Okay, as if all that wasn't dramatic enough throw in a rich handsome neighbor love interest with secrets of his own, a mysterious dead body, a fun step family, and a big twisty secret. I couldn't stop reading, but looking at my notes...it's a lot to unpack. :)

If you haven't read a Colleen Hoover novel, start with It Ends With Us

Okay this might be the most random selection I have to offer you for this month, however it was SO FREAKING GOOD. This was an Audible suggestion as well. (Amazon just gets me, you know?). I'm guessing this fell into my queue because I read the two royal YA series novels and some of the things my son is reading in the middle grades category. I was intrigued by the synopsis of The Inheritance Games and pushed "listen".

The story follows Avery Grambs who is a half homeless high school student sleeping in her car. All that changes when a boy not too much older than her shows up a her school informing her she is named in the will of a billionaire. Not just any billionaire. THE billionaire of all billionaires. And the entire fortune? Hers. But why?

The story unfolds as a mystery, toned down thriller, and romance all wrapped up into one. I couldn't stop listening. There were so many twists and turns and new discoveries I wanted to learn more. It was extremely well written, and gives your brain a workout in some places. The love triangle is perfection. The characters are all very well written and each one is special to the story. The book finishes with a lot of answers and closure, but a clear opening to a sequel. Count. Me. In.

WHAT'S UP NEXT...

CARRIE BETH

I just downloaded One to Watch by Kate Stayman-London and can't wait to get started on it.  I always take Jen's suggestions and am excited about this one!

I am actually on the fence about what I want to start up next. I have Nicholas Sparks' newest book, The Return, ready to go. But...I don't know if I'm ready to sink into it just yet.

Bring on any suggestions because the carpool/mom-taxi life only increases this month with added activities and our area opening up even more from all things COVID. Pass along all the entertaining goodness you have in your arsenal - we'll need it!
