Tailgating Tips & Tricks

It's no hidden secret that we love a good tailgate. We are huge sports fans, and since we live in the South most every season offers up good weather to bring any sort of party outside. We loved kicking off this year's football season with a fun tailgate party with our friends, but it got us thinking...

Over the years our tailgates have definitely evolved. Especially once kids were added to the mix. We wouldn't say kids made them any less tame. They just offered up a different level of team spirit and excitement.

From college to post college to the addition of kids, we've never missed a chance to show our tailgate team spirit at least one good time a year.

And those of you from this neck of the woods know that there's no just throwing your food in a picnic basket and calling it a day. Tailgates in the South require careful planning, elaborate team themed decor, and space large enough to hold a bar, buffet, big screen TV (with satellite dish) and a dance floor.

Let's not even mention the food.

But just because here in the deep south we like our tailgates to be a little extra doesn't mean we want to spend our whole week leading up to our game day festivities preparing. We've learned a trick or two make the whole process almost seem *almost * effortless. Here are some of our favorite tailgating tips and tricks we've learned over the years.

TAILGATING TIPS & TRICKS

THE GROCERY STORE IS YOUR BFF
This is our truth. We are huge fans of purchasing store prepared foods for any and all events. Especially tailgating events. Most grocery stores have excellent deli, bakery, and prepared food sections. And trust us, they can whip up chicken fingers, buffalo chicken dip, and 100 team themed cupcakes much faster (and better tasting if we're being totally honest) that we can. In the off chance we feel like we want to get "fancy", we can take a store bought food and dress it up or add to it.

Which brings us to our next tip...

FANCY DISHES = FANCY FOOD
Okay, well maybe that isn't completely true. But fancy dishes can make your tailgate look fancy. And by fancy dishes we mean game day themed serving ware. Throwing your grocery store cookies or pre-made dip in a game day serving piece instead of it's original packaging, and your tailgate mates will be none the wiser.

MAKE SURE YOUR BAG IS IN THE CLEAR
Stadiums are slowly transitioning over completely to the clear bag rule. Most pro-stadiums already require it, and now even down to high school stadiums a small clear bag is the only bag allowed in. As large tote carrying individuals this originally threw us for a loop. We like to be prepared for any and all situations and we're pretty sure we could survive in the Alaskan wilderness for a month based on what we store in our totes. But, we get it - safety first.

Luckily, the creative makers behind the clear bags have started to make them a little more attractive. we love that you can find cute team specific clear bags options now.

We've also learned just what to pack in our bags for a day of tailgating and stadium going. Here are some of our must haves:
  • Bracelet Key Ring
  • Pinch Minimergency Kit (Contains so many great items to help in any little situation that might pop up! We can't rave enough about these!)
  • Mini-deodorant
  • Pack of mini-tissues
  • A pen
  • Lip Balm/Lip Gloss
  • Mini-sunscreen stick

FLAUNT YOUR JEWELS

We can theme wear with the best of them, but we've learned that team gear can be kind of expensive for just one or two wears a season. So we have learned to invest our money in basic outfit pieces in our team colors, and then to accessorize with team themed jewelry. Something we can wear each and every game day weekend and mix into our everyday wardrobe if we want to without seeming over the top.

DON'T FORGET THE KIDS
There are two kinds of tailgates. Regular tailgates vs. tailgates with kids. We mentioned this earlier, but really it bares repeating. Because when it comes to tailgating if the kids aren't happy, nobody is happy. Pre-game festivities plus a few hours dedicated to the actual game can make for a long day, especially for children. So come prepared. Bring games for them, things to color, and don't underestimate the power of a ball and recruiting surrounding tailgates children for an impromptu team game. Make sure there are tons of child friendly foods and age appropriate activities available so that kids are also able to enjoy the tailgate.

A FEW OTHER NOTEWORTHY TIPS & TRICKS

  • Pre-pack a utensil caddy. This cuts down on the trash and its ready to go once you arrive. It's easy to pack and one less thing on the to-do list during set up.
  • Pack blankets and pillows. Not just for the cozy factor, but for cooler games keep blankets and small throw pillows in your trunk just in case. Weather can be fickle and sometimes that extra layer of warmth is welcomed.
  • If grilling, do as much prep-work the night before. Pre-assemble your kabobs, pre-make your hamburger patties. It cuts down majorly on cook time at the actual tailgate.
  • Always pack a sharpie. Always. To label drinks, food, etc.
  • Pack jumper cables. Trust us.
  • Hang paper towels throughout the tent with bungee cords. It's amazing how helpful this is. (Google to see what we are talking about!)
  • Utilize a drawer rubbermaid to store all tailgate essentials (plates, napkins, forks, etc.). This way it's easy to pre-pack, store in your car, and ready to go each tailgate. All you have to worry about is the occasional restock, but everything is stored and ready to go in one organized space.

Good Luck Goodies

Just as our fall sports are dying down, winter sports are gearing up. Yesterday, Jen mentioned about some of the Mini-Magnolias playing basketball and that also means that competition cheer season is starting!  Little Mama's team had their very first competition of the season this past weekend and it was SO much fun.

They have worked so hard since the summer conditioning, training and learning their routine, but no matter how much preparation you put into it ahead of time, there is always last minute stuff that arises and there was a lot of last minute stuff this year.

Everyone was excited, but nervous also and I wanted to give them team some sort of little treat that helped get them excited and prepare for the big weekend!

I was on Oriental Trading looking for ideas for our winter class parties and saw all of the snowflake stuff and that got me thinking.  Her team name is ICE and the snowflake stuff went along with the team perfectly!  I decided to come up with some sort of little good luck goodies with the snowflake stuff.  When I started looking a little more and realized that I could do personalized team support items also. I had NO idea Oriental Trading had those types of products, but was so happy to discover them.

For the lollipops and clappers I designed the stickers with the gym logo and it was shipped on a sticker sheet so all I had to do was put the stickers on the items.

It was so simple and super cute! The items came in every color and I could personalized the sticker color also so it was perfect and matched her team and gym colors exactly.

I found pencils that could also be personalized and was going to do a solid color until I saw the snowflake ones and knew those would be perfect.  Their team chant is a throwback to Vanilla Ice days and they end every practice with "Ice, Ice Baby" so I knew that was what I had to get on them!

I used these buckets and also got the snowflake keychains for them to put on their cheer backpacks and these snowflake stress balls.  I added Ice Breakers mints to the buckets and they were complete!

I could not contain my excitement about how cute these turned out and I was so excited to give it to them at the pep rally before the competition.

Little Mama had been out of town for a school field trip so when she saw them when she got home she was over the moon with excitement and couldn't wait to help pass them out to her teammates.

All the kids (and coaches) loved the personalized details on the treats and it must have done the trick because her team did amazing!

They had zero deductions and were only .07 away from first place which was great for their first competition! We have another one this weekend so I can't wait to see how they improve each week!

These goodies were such a hit that I know Oriental Trading will be my new go-go for all of our team support treats.  Between soccer, basketball, baseball and more, I know we'll be able to come up with all sorts of variations on good luck treats like this!

Fashion Fix: Team Spirit

Football season is officially underway and we couldn't be more excited! We will always be summer girls, but in the South fall is full of so many fun things. Leading the list is football and cheering on our favorite teams (Go Dawgs! Go Falcons!).

Fall football also means fall Game Day attire. Getting dressed up (or dress down) for Game Day is almost as much fun as the game itself. You know we love us a good theme wear situation and down south game day provides the ultimate of theme wear opportunities.

So today is all about our favorite team spirit gear, and some of the most trendy, comfy, and fun game day attire that we could find!

Team Spirit Tees

What's a Game Day without the perfect comfy tee?  We love showing off our team spirit, but we love be comfortable while doing so. Game days tend to be long and you are on your feet a large part of the day.

These vintage style tees from Stewart Simmons are some of our favorite! Stewart Simmons has a ton of super cute items for football season and beyond. They are one of our newest favorite small shops and we love love love they are based in Atlanta!

The tees are super soft, and we love that the Bulldog logo is simple and not over the top. This Bulldog Pocket Tee has been Carrie Beth's Game Day go to since the season started. It's something we feel we can wear any day of the week!

Love this vintage tee and hat for UGA football Game Days! Super cute women's clothing line for tailgate attire. Southern style tailgate style!

But don't worry. If you aren't a Dawg fan (but why aren't you?), there are tons of cute tees available in other school mascots.  Seriously, how cute are these tees?

Cute and trendy game day tees for college game days. Perfect tailgate attire for women!

That is just a small peek at the adorable tees Stewart Simmons has. We probably will pick up a couple more before the season is over just because of how much we love them.

We've also spotted some super cute tees while we have been out and about. Especially if you attending a tailgate, game or party, but aren't necessarily cheering on one particular team.

The "Tailgates & Touchdowns tee" had us swooning and is currently on a delivery truck headed to one of our houses. Love it!

Our girl Kathryn at Feathered Nest Boutique has some super cute stuff as well. We have a few things on order for us and the kids but in the meantime check out this cuteness...

Dresses

Football season wouldn't be complete without throwing in a good dress or two in the mix. In the South it's typically tradition to wear dresses to the games, but as we've gotten older we've become a little more casual about our game day attire. That's why we love this cozy pocket shift dress

How cute is it, with the little bulldogs all over it?!

Cute dresses and hats for college game days. Great comfortable game day tailgate attire.

It is super soft, and looks good on almost any body type. It looks great dressed up with booties or casual with flip flops. It's been one of our go-tos this season. It also comes in a red version that would be so cute with a black scarf or blazer once things cool off.

Cute dresses for game days!

Stewart Simmons also makes some other  super adorable game day themed dresses. While we aren't huge Tennessee fans, this little shift is something we can get behind. We love the hound dog detailing at the bottom.

Shoes & Accessories

Sometimes all you need to get in the spirit is a fun little accessory or two. Throw on a plain white tee and some jeans, or a solid color shift dress, and then put on a team inspired accessory and your tailgate outfit is complete!

Cute UGA Bulldogs vintage style hat for women. Super cute game day ball caps and accessories!

Hats are by far one of our favorite accessories. Especially during the hotter part of the season. Our faces are protected. We don't really have to worry about humidity killing our perfectly styled hair. They are the perfect game day accessory. Our favorites this year are these vintage styled ball caps.

Aside from hats, our second favorite accessory is a good themed purse. We like them to be light, easy, and functional. Just large enough to hold our phones, tickets, and any other game day needs. Years ago Dooney and Bourke came out with their team spirit lines and we absolutely adore them!

They have both NCAA teams and Pro teams available in a variety of styles and patterns. They are beyond cute in person. The crossbodies and wristlets are our favorite because they allows us to be hands free for the day. The totes are our go to when we have the kids with us, and we need something a little larger for their needs too.

Fun monogrammed clear tote for game days. Pro stadium style.

We know some stadiums have a no bag or a clear bag policy and that puts a limitation on what you can bring. We were so excited when we learned our girl Kathyrn came through with a super cute clear tote option. And it has a monogram!

These game day shoes might be the cutest thing our eyes have ever seen!

Cute game day tailgating shoes!

I mean how stinking cute are those wedges?! This little show line was something we stumbled upon while searching Amazon and died of the cuteness. The rainboots, flip flops, flats, and wedges are all so much fun. They come in a variety of team options and all have a removable bow. Love that! Especially with how cute these are to wear daily and not just on game days.

Spirit wear is just so fun! See our favorite teams colors and mascots displayed proudly on game days just makes us happy. We are so excited to have found so many fun new pieces to add to our tailgate closets this year! Do you have any fun ones to add? Do share because there is always room for more. ;)

Who will you be cheering on this weekend?
