My 2021 Goal: House Projects

I  don't know that I have ever been happier to welcome in a New Year like I did this year.  I don't usually make a resolution for the New Year, but I do like to make some general goals for each year.  My goal for 2020 was to travel more and we all see where that got me.  We cancelled trips to the Bahamas, Napa, and London. Sigh. This year I'm keeping my goals closer to home and in fact house projects is actually my number one goal this year.  I posted about that on Instagram Stories and had several people ask if I didn't get all my home projects done in 2020 when we were stuck at home. We actually didn't really do much in the way of our house indoors last year, but we did add the fence that I still love to come home to everyday.

We built our house about 7 years ago and when it was finally finished I was full speed ahead getting things decorated.  I bought furniture, made curtains, found rugs, picked pillows and then I just sort of "set it and forget it." (Anyone remember that infomercial?!)

We did finish our basement a few years ago, but besides that we have just been enjoying things like they are.  I also think that you can kind of get complacent about your home...or at least I can. I see it day in, day out and usually just see things like shoes my family can't seem to pick up and endless cleaning chores that need to be done.

However, after recently visiting a few friends' homes that had just been remodeled and checking out some amazing Instagram accounts I got the decorating bug.  That combined with the fact that we are spending more time at home these days, I made house projects my 2021 goal.

When I started thinking of all the things I wanted to do I got giddy with excitement.  I forgot how much I love Pinterest, how much I love a good DIY. It's so fun to see how things come together.  I've got a long list of projects and cannot wait to start tackling some of them. Some projects will be small (like making new curtains for my master), some will be DIY (for me that means painting furniture and for the Mr. that means power tools), some will involve new furniture (still on the hunt), and a lot will involve using our current furniture in different parts of my house.

One final project will be something MAJOR and I couldn't be more excited about it! I can't wait to take you all along with me this year to share everything I'm doing, both big and small, as I mark things off my decorating to-do list!

What is your goal for 2021?

Guest Bath Refresh

A few weeks ago I got the itch to update some spaces in our home.  Nothing crazy, but just a little updating here and there. I hadn't really made any chances except to the kids' rooms since we moved in almost 6 years ago!

One of the spaces I wanted to change up was our guest bathroom.  It's a small ensuite bath and gets used when we have family or friends visiting, so not on a regular basis. When we first moved in I put up an old shower curtain that we had from our previous house. It was much darker with tans, golds and browns. I also had dark bath mats in here. Because I rarely go in there it is one of those things that was kind of out of sight, out of mind.  However, I finally decided to give it a little refresh and love how it turned out!

I found the blue and white buffalo check shower curtain for under $20 HERE and knew it was just the look I was going for. Something lighter and brighter to freshen up this space.

The cotton wreath came from Oriental Trading, but I found a similar one on Amazon HERE.  I grabbed a matching blue satin ribbon from the craft store and tied a bow to pull out the blue from the shower curtain.

I also switched out the darker bath mats for cream ones that were only $8 each HERE. It's just amazing how something small like that can really change the look of the room.

I know I always seem to forget some necessity when we are traveling or visiting friends so I like to keep some extras on hand for our guests.  Toothbrushes, shampoo/conditioner, lotions, soap, Ibuprofen, etc.  Most of this stuff is usually extras we bring home from hotels and I just put them in a basket under the skin or in this little galvanized bin with washcloths so our guest can feel like they have everything they might need.

My mom is coming to visit in just a few weeks so I'm happy to have finally freshened up this space just in time for her to use it!

Adding Farmhouse Inspired Touches

This post is in partnership with Christmas Tree Shops andThat!. All thoughts and opinions are our own.

It's no secret that we love farmhouse-inspired decorating touches in our home.  Give us all the distressed wood, pops of green, mix of metals and casual, relaxed style.

When we learned that one of our favorites, andThat!, was launching an exclusive farmhouse inspired line called The Grainhouse we couldn't wait to check it out. We walked in and fell in farmhouse love!

There were so many affordable and stylish pieces!

We both had a few home decorating projects in the works and we found so many great items to use in our spaces.

We had the best time shopping in store!  The Grainhouse collection has everything from furniture to textiles and all your entertaining essentials.

Carrie Beth
I was in the process of refreshing a room off of my master closet.  It's a space that was originally built as a craft/sewing room, but since then my needs have shifted a bit. I wanted to transform it into a space that could be a multifunctional room.  One that would serve as an office, dressing room and "blogger space."  I know...how very blogger of me. ;-)

Seriously though, Jen and I started The Magnolia Mamas so that we could have a creative outlet and something that would help give us some of our identity back as we were both stay-at-home moms with very young children at the time.

Because the blog has grown, I wanted a place that was just mine.  Somewhere I could go to have some peace and quiet, somewhere I could go to focus and write when working on a blog post, and a fun spot for taking outfit pictures and displaying some items that are special to me.

There are so many things I love about this room.  Mostly though, I just love it because it feels so peaceful to me.

I love using items in unexpected ways. I feel like that is part of what makes the farmhouse inspired decorating style so much fun.  A basket full of rugs rolled up in not only going to be functional for me to have for different photoshoots, but it also fills that corner and softens the room.

I fell in love with this gorgeous galvanized metal platter and couldn't believe the price! Obviously it would usually be used for entertaining in a kitchen I used it to add another mix of materials and it is serving as a catchall for jewelry and accessories.

Also, this picture frame became a cork board when I added a cork sheet to it and it now displays some very special items!

The handkerchiefs, broaches, and beaded necklace are accessories that belonged to my grandmothers and I also added my wedding day earrings.  My grandmothers were the epitome of southern belle's and they were so very stylish.  From fancy scarfs, fun jewelry and never leaving the house without lipstick, I feel like they definitely played a part in my own style.  Because sharing style is so much of what we do now on the blog, I love that I can look at these pieces daily.

Jen
I'm so excited about Carrie Beth's new space I can't stand it! It makes me want to tell my kids they now need to share a bedroom so I can claim a room and decorate it all Magnolia dreamlike on my own!

I love that from bookshelves to baskets (and everything in between) it was purchased from one store! Shopping at andThat! Is always so fun, but shopping together was such an experience. You should have seen us strolling through there with multiple carts filled with Grainhouse products. The checkout girl didn't know what to think. She laughingly said in passing, "Y'all purchased one of everything! You will have to take pictures of all this when its put together and send it to the store."

Girlfriend had no idea of the snap-happy purchasers she was dealing with.

I was lucky to get a teeny tiny sneak peek of the Grainhouse line a few months ago when I was getting started on my bedroom makeover. I'll discuss more of the details on that next week, but when I was shopping with Carrie Beth I couldn't help but grab a few more items to add.

The Grainhouse bedding is swoon worthy and so inexpensive! I had purchased the striped bedding  a few months ago, but the minute I spotted (or really felt) the white Washed Pintuck Comforter Set I knew I had to have it. It feels like a cloud. And I don't know about you, but that's kind of what I'm going for when it comes to the whole sleep thing.

One of my favorite parts about the Grainhouse line is all the throw pillows. As a not so recovering pillow addict, it was so hard to limit myself to just a "few". I wasn't about to leave the store without at least one ruffle pillow and one macrame pillow in my possession. Stumbling upon the railroad striped pillows were just an added bonus.

And I didn't just stop at the bed. No my friends. I put those throw pillow everywhere I could. They just add the finishing touch to a room I think. You can never have enough.

Cozy soft throw blankets come in a close second.

I limited myself to just one. A girl has to show some restraint occasionally.

I grabbed this cute round accent table and a few picture frames, topiaries and other little accessories to complete the space.

I have a few more home projects on the horizon and already have a few more fun pieces from the Grainhouse line earmarked for purchase.

Home Tour: Mudroom Cubbies

When we were planning to build our house we made a wish-list of things we wanted to include. One thing that was at the very top of my list was a mudroom entry. I wanted a space that would help everyone's things stay organized and off of the kitchen counters.

In our old home we entered directly from the garage into the kitchen and everything ended up on the kitchen counters.  I really wanted to design a space that would act as our "dumping zone" so that everyone had a place to put shoes, hats, jackets, bags, etc.

After searching for lots of pics and ideas on Pinterest, I ultimately decided on a cubby system so that everyone would have their own dedicated space.  I could have just done three for the kids, but let's face it...the Mr. and I also come home with a bunch of stuff so we needed a space, too!

I'll be honest, this space does not always look neat and tidy. The kids will pile up their things (not wanting to have to carry them upstairs to their rooms), they will leave shoes sitting on the ground, and they don't always hang up their backpacks. However, it keeps it all contained and they have a space to put all their stuff, so for that I am grateful!

We use the bottom baskets for shoes so they are easy to grab and go when we are ready to head out the door.

I made sure we had lots of hooks in each cubbie so they we can all hang jackets, backpacks, purses, hats, etc.

The top baskets hold everyone's winter accessories like hats, scarves and gloves.

Originally I thought each kid could keep their sports bags in their cubbies also, but those are just too big and with all of the other stuff, we've found another space for those to live.

The top of our cubbies had stayed bare for a long time, but I've recently been going through a bit of a home refresh in certain areas and I was excited to finally decorate this "dead space" to give it a little something extra.

I started with this rustic name sign from Canvas Vows.  I love that it looks like it is painted on a wooden palate, but instead is just printed a canvas.  It is super light wight and made it easy to hang.  I also love that it has each of our names and that it welcomes everyone to our home that might enter in this way! P.S. - I feel like this would be a great Christmas gift for someone or even a housewarming gift!

After the Mr. hung that up for me I went shopping around my house. I like to move things around from time to time and I was able to grab the wooden bird house off my screened porch to use and the lantern was on another table that I decided to move and use here. Then I went shopping at Old Time Pottery to grab a few other fillers for the rest of the space.

When I have a shelf or space like this to decorate I always try to layer items and I almost always stick to my same philosophy. I use something green, something metal, and something wooden.  I tend to throw in some sort of woven basket and I love a good lantern and a candle.  If you look around my house you will find different variations of this all over!  I just love the mix of materials and the added texture.

So there you have it.  This might be the most used spot in our home and it is definitely the one that I'm most thankful for with a busy family!

Boy's Baseball Room {Inspiration}

It's safe to say my little guy is baseball obsessed.  He is into his second season of playing and his first game of the spring season was last weekend.  He played great and I was totally that proud mom yelling from the bleachers!  He had awesome hits, great fielding (for a 5 year old), and got the first game ball.

He asks everyday if he has baseball and if he doesn't have a game or a practice he wants me out in the driveway practicing with him. Because I see how much he loves it, I've pretty much become baseball obsessed myself, too.

A few months ago he mentioned that he wished he could have baseball stuff in his room so I made him a deal and told him we'd switch out the nautical decor for baseball stuff.  He was over the moon.  Then life happened and while the idea keeps hanging around in my head, I haven't actually done anything to keep good on my promise.

He's lived in a nautical room since hew as a baby.  I did a nautical nursery for him and then when we moved to our new house I changed things up a bit, but still kept the nautical theme since I already had tons of stuff.

The good news is, since his quilt, curtains, walls, etc. are all blue and red I can easily switch out the "boat stuff" as he calls it for the "cool baseball stuff" he wants.

Last week when I was browsing Goodwill for a project I'm working on (more on that next week), I came across this cute baseball print!  It just needs a new frame, but it was less than $4 so I was so excited to find it.  Y'all know I love a good deal!  I'm also heading to one of my favorite kid consignment sales tomorrow so I'm hoping to find a few things there.

Last night I spent some time searching the internet and I found that Pottery Barn Kids has some adorable baseball stuff right now.

I'm loving this baseball pin-board and trying to find a way to justify buying it for his room. It's a little pricey, but OH SO CUTE!

This metal MLB sign is just calling for me. I LOVE mixing antique looking things into our home and I this metal sign has me swooning.  Thinking this would look super cute hanging over his bed or as part of a gallery wall!

I've already decided I'm ordering these little baseball knobs.  They come two to a set and they are on major sale right now so I'm going to switch them out for the knobs on his current dresser.

He had a cute little sailboat lamp in his room that needs to be replaced and I loved this wooden lamp shaped like a bat and the cute baseball shade.

He saw this one as I was searching for stuff last night though and loved the stacked baseball lamp, so we may end up with this one instead, which is still super cute.

I've been using just a plain navy quilt that I bought at Target a few years ago with the sailboat pillow shams. I'm going to switch those out for the navy shams that came with his quilt and just plan to get some cute throw pillows like this one to add to his bed.

I also scrolled through Pinterest and found tons of cute ideas.  Boo-Boo actually loved looking with me and would comment on just about everything he saw. He got really excited when I kept pinning stuff because he asked if that meant it was the list of what we were getting.  Then when he saw me pinning baseball mom stuff he started making gagging noises and told me he did not want those things in his room.  You can see all my fun baseball pins HERE.  His very favorites were this baseball wall and the baseball diamond painted in the yard.  I might just have to do that this summer.

I'll continue to share what I find and will certainly post about the final outcome of his baseball room in a few weeks!
