Book Club: February

Happy Book Club Day! We kicked off the 2016 with a bestseller that has been in our pile from 2015. All we can say is why did we wait so long to dig into Kristin Hannah's The Nightingale?? As always here are our thoughts, and we can't wait to hear yours!

Oh my I should not have read this book so pregnant! Kristen Hannah's books are always so filled with emotion and sometimes are major tear jerkers. My pregnant self could not handle hearing all the tragedies these poor characters endured during war times. The story was so good, and an interesting tale of love and loss. I found myself unable to put it down The Nightingale, and was instantly drawn to finding out what happens to both of the sisters and how their lives played out.

Throughout the book I had my guesses as to which sister was speaking to the audience. While I loved the end of the book, I was so sad to learn what happened to some of the characters. (Again, insert big fat ugly pregnant tears here.)

I would definitely recommend this book as one to read if you weren't able to read it this month with us. It is a great story and, just like a previous book on our list, gives you somewhat a glimpse into what a past generation had to bravely endure.

Now to Discuss: Did you enjoy The Nightingale? What did you think of the relationship between Isabelle and her father? Vianne? Do you think you would have been as brave as either sister in the same situations? Were you able to figure out what sister the book's perspective was from before the end?

FEBRUARY'S SELECTION:
Who Do You Love by Jennifer Weiner

From the Back Cover:
An unforgettable story about true love, real life, and second chances…

Rachel Blum and Andy Landis are just eight years old when they meet one night in an ER waiting room. Born with a congenital heart defect, Rachel is a veteran of hospitals, and she’s intrigued by the boy who shows up alone with a broken arm. He tells her his name. She tells him a story. After Andy’s taken back to a doctor and Rachel’s sent back to her bed, they think they’ll never see each other again.

Rachel grows up in an affluent Florida suburb, the popular and protected daughter of two doting parents. Andy grows up poor in Philadelphia with a single mom and a rare talent for running.

Yet, over the next three decades, Andy and Rachel will meet again and again—linked by chance, history, and the memory of the first time they met, a night that changed the course of both of their lives.

A sweeping, warmhearted, and intimate tale, Who Do You Love is an extraordinary novel about the passage of time, the way people change and change each other, and how the measure of a life is who you love.
